It's not just Tacos, California imposed a weight fee now which is something like an extra $100 for vehicles weighing over a certain criteria.

I received my plates and registration paper last week or so and the initial registration was $534. I'm assuming somewhere in the $450+ range for next year. I know my Sienna (which doesn't have the weight fee), was around $450 last year and this year is $335. So I am hoping for something similar for the Taco.

When I was doing paperwork at the dealer, the weight fee was $214.

1st - 3rd Gens for me has always been $80 additional for weight fee. In my last two trucks, I actually had the weight fee taken off by having a shell though you have to go through the hassle of having DMV inspect it. According to DMV's description, the shell have to be permanently attached. Though I read that if CHP catches you without the shell, there's a fine additional to all the fees owed. I never take off the shell once it's on there.

Also note that commercial plate numbers differ from personal plate numbers.

And this is one of the many reasons I will never live in california. I just renewed my alabama tags and it was $24 and change. Granted, I have a 2003.

In CA if you buy a truck, instant commercial plates and fees. It's a money maker. How many people do you know that have a truck and uses it commercially for business?

Well I work for a courier company so I’m probably the outlier but almost everyone I know uses their truck for business. But a lot of my friends are couriers.

Try parking in downtown sf without commercial plates.

I have changed my registration to avoid the dumbass weight fee. Saved $480. Yes the shell should stay on, but okay to remove to repair. No citation if bed empty.

I wonder if that would depend at the officer's discretion though
