Aftermarket MT shift knobs

I love that TRD cueball knob! Looks like you went with the grommet trick for the boot? Which size?

 

I tried both 5/8 and 23/32 ID grommets from Lowe's, both with 1 1/8" OD. The problem is the OD at 1 1/8" was still too small to cover the boot ring. So I went to O'Reilly auto parts and they had these PCV rubber grommets which had no size on the packets. I just eyeballed it, brought along my Lowe's grommet and picked the one with an OD that's larger. I ended up trimming the larger lip of this PCV grommet and the smaller lip is what you see covering the ring.

BTW I didn't use the alignment nut that came with the TRD ball. It just aligned perfectly on the thread.

 

I've got my TRD ball (ordered during the 40th anniversary sale), but might hold off on installing it until I trade in for a 2020. Right now I've got the TRD Pro shifter which is pretty nice too, so not as motivated to change it as I would be if I was still running the stock one. I picked up the 1-1/8OD x 5/8ID grommet from Lowes to use with it as was suggested in some threads and Amazon reviews. Thanks for the info on that, if it doesn't work as well as I hope, I can try one from O'Reilly. Also good to know about the alignment nut, I'll probably try it without the nut when the time comes and hopefully it'll align perfectly like yours did!

Jumped on the gray trd cue ball and quite like it. Used a 3/4” grommet from Home Depot and works good enough for me. Much prefer this to the standard Pro knob...which, by the way, I’d be willing to sell if anybody is interested?

Yeah! I believe it was originally a FJ knob.

 

What is the weight difference between the pro knob and the grey knob?

 

I didn’t weigh them, but they feel pretty similar in the hand. I love the feel of the cue ball and it shifts beautifully (but so did the stock one).

 

the gray one isnt weighted so its definately a meager amount.

I have this exact one in mine from billetwerkz It is the weighted version and nice. People told me it will be super hot and burn me but yeah not so much...on a blistering hot day it is room temp....I am sure when its cold though I bet it is cold but whatever.

 

Here's what I used to mod the shifter knob. The rubber grommet fits like a glove.

 

At the risk of going off topic, is anyone running a better looking shift boot for the MT? There is a short thread on this for the AT and the e-brake boot from Renline, but nothing for the MT. I prefer the older look where some of the shift lever was visiable.

 

there's a guy on here that has it like your interested, maybe he'll comment or someone can add to it... basically under the collar is a zip tie you can cut and adjust the amount of lever is visible...be aware you have take off the surrounding plastic to expose the zip tie...i haven't done it i just remember someone mentioned they did...good luck let us know what you do and what you think after if you do it

 

I thought I had posted it here, but it looks like I didn't.

Here's my setup:


-- @7r41lbr34k3r full delrin knob (162g) and MT boot collar cover
-- Matte black boot collar (sanded / painted)
-- Redline shift boot

I did all three Redline pieces, but I would recommend against the e-brake boot and padded console cover. The e-brake boot itself is nice, but the bracket option is just the glued in wire. It is too small of a gauge compared to the OEM. So forming it (ships flat) and keeping it clipped in is tricky. The console cover is finicky to install, does not fit well, and the foam is wayyy too soft (pretty much useless for adding height). I intend to get the console cover redone by someone with skills.

The Redline shift boot does rock though.
