Just walked into the wrong place to ask for a quote on a paint job. I was referred there by another shop in town. Pretty normal looking place honestly.

My clear is faded pretty bad on the top of the cab and I just wanted a paint refresher. Quick body work on some small dings here and there... maybe 6 of them no larger than a skittle. Spray same color and new clear. No door jamb work, bed removal,or anything fancy.

    $8,500.

No thanks my man. I’m out. I expected a higher end quote to be around $3000 at the most.

That is absurd. Although doing a whole body panel is easier than random spots. Lots more effort to prep and paint then blend.

They prolly priced it ridiculously high so that you wouldn't have them do it. They prolly didn't want to do the job

Yeah that sounds about right. I called a shop in San Francisco and was quoted $8,000. Paint jobs are all in prep work, you get what you pay for with them.

Cant expect oem or better quality in the sub $5kish range. That may be high for a rural area, but about normal for a large city.

That's the "we don't want to bother with your truck" quote.

Unless that quote included removal of doors, etc. (which you stated you didn't want to do), then I'm right on the money.

Most body shops that I've visited and know say they lose money on complete paint jobs. It takes so long to properly prep. Then if anything goes wrong, on a large surface, the rework is costly. They prefer to do body repair and only paint a given section. When I had my Taco in the body shop a few weeks ago for some minor bodywork, they had a full 57 T-bird restoration going. That's the kind of job where they can make a profit.

Got my Subaru Impreza completely repainted for 1000 bucks with over 100 grams of pearl, I had to do all the prep stuff it is really all in the prep or the paint will suck. Takes a friend to give ya that deal.

I was quoted anywhere between $5k and $9k from a few different shops in the Bay Area. These are prices for a really decent shop with good quality paint. You seriously get what you pay for with paint jobs.

Time is money much more profit to bang out several insurance jobs instead of one complete paint job .

So complete paint jobs are priced according to shop hours what ever the going rate is .

    all in the prep work.

I had hoped to have a vehicle with all one color one day

paintjobs are expensive and you really get what you pay for with these. What's expensive is not the paint in itself, it's the prep work

Anyway, it is possible to get a decend job for 3-5k, but you just have to keep looking and shop around.

Heck, I've shopped around for a loooong time for mine, quotes were all over the place too

It also depends on where you live but typically for a very very good job it’s 500.00 per panel.

    Yeah.
When I did paint and body work 30+ years ago, we charged in the $3K range for a full paint job that required minimal panel repair, more if there were issues with it -- like if it had already been repainted poorly once. I was able to strip nearly all the paint off of a Cadillac with compressed air once -- it had been painted in CA with a water-based paint and poorly prepped. Adjusting for inflation, that's in the $7K range in today's prices. $8500 does seem high, but it's not that out of the ballpark.

You'd probably be surprised at how many small dings are on your vehicle that are hard to see. Sucks to miss one or two before laying down the paint.

I've got a buddy who manages/runs a used car dealership. He got me hooked up with a body shop where he sends cars for work daily. I'm getting work done at his bulk pricing level.

All things are possible when you pay cash and leave a tip.

i was quoted nearly $4k for the whole back box and tailgate (not sure if it included re-striping or not)
I chose the permanent Line-X job to avoid that bill :spending:
