    :NOOB ALERT:

So My history with 4X4's is pretty limited. Ive been in plenty of mud, but thats about it.

What advantage will the locking rear differential give me as far as off road performance. I assume this means that both tires will turn at the same time.

Im in louisiana, so the "off-roading" i'll be doing will be going to muddy job sites, and the duck/deer blind.

Is it worth the $$$ for me?

When you have it fully lock both tires get the same power.

When is this the greatest advantage?

Rock, mud, ice, sand (or all of the above?)

And is it "auto" or a manual switch in the taco?

Locking differentials provide the most help when one wheel has no traction (such as being elevated off the ground, or on a low traction surface).

In this case, the open differential causes the low-traction wheel to spin, and almost no power goes to the wheel with traction. This results in the vehicle going nowhere, and is why 4 wheel drive is sometimes jokingly called 2 wheel drive (2WD is jokingly called 1WD).

A locking differential forces both tires to turn at the same RPM, providing equal torque to unequally tractive tires.

It is a manually activated system in the Tacoma.

If you're not sure how some of these systems work, read your owner's manual thoroughly before using them. Misuse of 4WD/diff locks can severely damage expensive chunks of your vehicle.
