Hey my alternator started whining a couple weeks ago then the check engine light came on. Checked and it was putting out 16.9V, I drove it for one day after that and then now with a new alternator installed it shut down on the highway, slowly lost elec. then power and pulled over. got a tow home and am freaking out!

New Alternator or a rebuilt aftermarket alternator?

Rebuilds are hit and miss and very possibly garbage out of the box.

Did you try and jump start it with a different battery?

It sounds like it isn't charging with the new alternator.

Sounds like the Diodes are going out. I have a thread on how to replace them.

I find that sad and disturbing at the same time. Can't hardly depend on much nowadays. Sucks you have to repair that all over again.

Made in China electronic internal components.

Either that or you are buying a junkyard alternator which has been removed from the like model vehicle, which has been cleaned up, bead blasted to make it look pretty, packaged up in a fancy box by the company, then sold and labeled as a "rebuilt/ remanufactured unit."

I only go Denso for reman items, we have always had pretty good luck using their stuff on customer vehicles. None of that Vatozone or O'Reilly garbage.

Or, find a good local shop that rebuilds them. We have a local one, quite small but the owner and one employee can rebuild pretty much any alternator or starter out there and he uses only top quality stuff. His prices are good and he will test for nothing.
