So I broke a 20 ton hydraulic press (cheap HF one) while trying to push out LCA bushings from the 4Runner this afternoon. I’m gonna need a recommendation for a shop to finish the job. I’m all set messing with these monsters for now.

 

Were you heating them up as you pressing them? The heat is an important factor as it expands the metal and the bushings just pop out.

 

Have you checked out North Village Smokehouse yet?

 

I'm sure yours are similar but the 2nd gens I use the factory bottle jack, heat, and on blaster. Works well

 

and prepare for the wonderful "protest perfume" scent. It really lingers for some time afterward.

Also, @DrFunker are these temp swings normal? 85 in the day and 50 at night all week! I've been loving it, but I feel like that's a little more late summer/fall weather.

 

I find it to be the best I've had so far at a restaurant up here. But it's Texas style so you may think otherwise if it's not up to your standards

 

I did the same for my FJ. Besides the fact I still need to cut the steel sleeves out and get the bj pressed out and a new one pressed in...

 

Unless the sleeves are rusted to the eyes of the lca

I wasn’t using heat with the shop press. Didn’t think of that honestly.

Tried that method first and got a little movement but nothing even close to getting the gushing out. Was getting a little skeptical because the arms of the LCA were separating a bit due to the force so I abandoned that plan.

Did you burn the physical bushing? I was just keeping a torch running on the outside of the sleeve.

 

That is the specific method I use. Slam the metal sleeve on the hole opening with a punch/air hammer, spray the pb blaster, heat up the arm, spray it again (this will make it soak up the pb blaster), start heating it again and then have someone else start pressing the bushing out while maintaining heat on it

 

I would immediately go for brisket, and hot links.....

I just said the other day how much it feels like fall.

Oh yeah. I burned everything!
Torched those suckers up like a s'mores party gone bad.

Was actually applying heat enough to get the bushing to move, but they did get torched. Nothing worse than burning rubber.

 

You could rent the bushing press from Autozone for free.

That was the issue I had with mine. I had to burn out the bushing, then cut the sleeve out from inside the LCA and peel the sleeve out from there. Fortunately, I had some good help for that weekend project!

 

Both good choices, the sides are really good as well

So nice out today! Wife and I went for a 10 mile bike ride this morning on the bike trail in Milford/holliston and then did a few hours of yard work we'd been putting off for a month or two. Now just hanging out the deck enjoying the weather!
