Are they ready yet?

 

What do you guys think about the install and tune of these? How difficult is this really gonna be? Us Cali guys will need to swap these out for every smog check. Even considering that, I’m debating on pulling the trigger. Thoughts?

 

Sounds like a weekend of work before and after a smog test. If I had the shop to do it I probably would!

 

It’s not a technically difficult job, although time consuming as @White lightning boosted said. I live in Alberta which is the Texas of Canada, so I don’t have to worry about these things, but I’d probably just invest my money in a way to cheat the smog test.

I seriously doubt that these will need to be swapped out to smog. If your cats are healthy, you should be fine at the sniffer.
Now, if you order some wild grind with tons of overlap that dumps a bunch of unburnt fuel down the exhaust, that’s another story.

Custom tuning is now available for these trucks via hptuners. So, finish your hard-part mods and get it on a dyno.

 

They don't do the sniff test in California anymore, it's all visual and OBD2 reading. But if they can "hear" the cam, you may be in trouble. Other wise I doubt they are going to open up the motor to see you installed different cams.

 

@Torspd could potentially help here. He’s got cams already. He could compare them to some stockers and report the differences. We’d then just compare his cam specs to the ones we’re ordering and see.

Last I saw though, he’d installed them and was buttoning it all back up.

 

Those mouth breathers aren’t going to fail the vehicle because it sounds funny. If the screen checks out and the visual is good, you’re good.

For factory cam specs could we find #s from a hilux easier? Maybe they're the same?

You only have until the 31, just remember. As long as the VVT-I is working, what these were spec'd for, then no codes to be found. Even the factory ECU won't care. It just won't be optimized.

A quietish but more free flowing muffler than stock. Get more flow and keep the noise Nazi's at bay, perhaps?

I still have access to them. Not completely buttoned up. Awaiting just like everyone else. Just taking care of other punch-list items in the mean time. I may be able to get the OEM dimensions, but that won't exactly translate to lift and duration. Without proper formulating.

As long as it is the same single VVT-I 1GR, and they have specs posted somewhere, then yes. Educated guess says that they have the same engines.

No. I feel the same. Eager for that fuel rail too. Should be a week or two for that as well.
