Popping sound when going downhill

As the title says. When Off Roading, going down a steep incline, their is a metal popping sound. Sounds horrible. I've looked under and dont see anything nor does it happen going up or normal driving.

Truck has a bilstein 6112/5160 with JBA UCAs, heavy duty leafs and larger bump stops on the back from all the weight I am carrying.

So my though is that I did not put larger bumps in the front after the lift and Incould be stuffing the front to far. Here is a vid.

Is the sound only downhill, or articulation in general? When was the lift installed? Did the popping start after that?

 

Downhill it seems when the weight is all the way forward. I didn't offroad before lift. I traded my 16 for a 19 and threw the suspension on that. New suspension.

 

20 second mark, doesn't look like your front is flexing at all. My guess is something in the rear based on the flex when it happens. Really tough to tell without being there obviously...

 

Also 30 second mark, watch your RR wheel braking when the sound happens. Seems to be simultaneous...

 

That’s a tough one. My initial thought was the rubber bushings, either front or rear were binding from being torqued on jack stands and not with the weight on them. But what you’re describing doesn’t sound it could be that. Honestly I’m unsure. What I would do though is go over every bolt you can think of and check it’s torque. Suspension, bed rack and rtt, etc. It’d be an easy starting point.

 

Yeah could be torques, it doesnt do it all the time on the incline downhill, just when u really stuff the shit out of it lol. I torqued the u bolts and stuff in the rear with weight, not the fronts.

 

Any rubber bushings (which is all oem bushings) you want to torque them down at ride height. Rubber bushings have limited rotation in either direction, which is why you do that. If you torque them at droop, once you go to stuff them, they’re really being stressed and can kill them prematurely, make lovely noises, etc.

With polyurethane bushings (what comes on pretty much all aftermarket suspension) this isn’t an issue. The metal sleeve that the bolt passes through rotates freely in the bushing. You can torque these down however you please.

I’m not sure that’s your issue (probably not) but thought I’d share the info since it’s helpful to know.

 

Make sure your parking brake cables are not stretching with droop. That will cause the rear brakes to momentarily actuate and bind.

 

My Dakar medium pack makes that sound sometimes. I think it is the military style wrap at the front of the leaf pack slapping in the shackle during articulation. I’ve tried everything to get rid of it. Weird thing is that when I have all leafs in to make it an HD leaf pack it doesn’t do it

 

My guess is a leafspring eye sliding side-to-side on the bushing and hitting the hanger or shackle.
