Hell man I wish I knew half as much today as I thought I knew back then.

I would suggest at the least the following for a minimum.

• Intel i7 processor
• If you truly are doing just light photo editing a laptop using Intel Integrator graphics will be fine. This will be included with the i7 lets say 85% of the time unless you buy a laptop with a discrete upgraded card
• 256GB SSD
• Brands...pick your poison. Unless you pay the extra money for the laptop to come with windows installed "clean" without all the other bloatware Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, etc....put on there machines, they are more or less the same machine made in the same factory slapped with a different logo on it (IMHO). If I had to choose a brand I'm really liking the quality of Dells right now, could also be that I'm primarily working with Dell machines.

Where I am split on is this:

• 16GB of RAM, I personally think it is a must. 8GB is slowly becoming not enough, but is typically common for a budget machine. If you can drop a $50 to $100 more for the 16GB of RAM just do it.

Something else to note, you could go with an i5 processor. I use this in my work laptop with 16GB of RAM and can do light video editing fine.

I do believe as @Kanyon71 said if you keep an eye out for sales you can get a machine with those min. specs pretty close to your budget and if you treat it fairly nice it will last quite some time.

Was just looking around on Dells site and they have a Vostro 5000 on sale for $779. It’s a 15.6” screen, i7, 256GB M.2 SSD, nVidia Discreet graphics, 8GB Ram (can be upgraded). If I needed a basic machine I would buy that. Getting a discreet card alone is always a plus.
