I spent the afternoon moving over brackets, sensors, etc from the old engine to the new longblock. I came across something I'm not familiar with. What is the function of this tube on the right-hand side of the block?

The tube is not present on the new engine, but the bolt is there and also the hole where the little tube is on the old engine.

Can it be a coolant bleeder? There’s a bolt above it.

I think you're correct! I googled a bit with similar terms and found it mentioned when draining coolant.

    Thanks!

Yeah thought so. The Honda I just worked on had something similar to drain the block of coolant.

I think he had a rod go through his block so it looks like he's just swapping engines

That's obvious. I was wondering if it was over revved or what.

I've seen this happen along with hydro lock on another engine. I'm sure the OP will pull the heads to do full look to see what happened.

Not really sure what happened besides the obvious. We bought the truck for my son, he drove it for less than 2 weeks and it had a catastrophic failure. It had 217k miles on it. I'm no expert, but the engine sounded fine in the days leading up to the failure. I must have heard the truck startup and leave the driveway 30 times. I was not present when the failure occurred.

I should do that today. I'm kind of at a standstill waiting for parts/tools.

I tried removing the old bleeder fitting, but it must be a single use press fitting. It's not coming out without destroying it.

It's definitely not threaded because it can not freely spin completely.

I'll live without having one on the new block, but it would be nice if it was complete. It's a part that would need to be installed before the engine gets installed in the truck, the engine mount and AC bracket will prevent it from being installed later.

Any ideas on a part number or substitute? I'm considering just getting some brass or aluminum tubing and making a part myself just in case I ever want to use the drain.

Yeah usually fittings like that are press fit coated with Teflon.

I just checked my old engine and it doesn't have the bleeder fitting/hose nipple. I have the bolt/plug above it. It's just a threaded opening where the bleeder would go. I looked at a picture of the 98 4Runner replacement engine and do not see the fitting. I don't know if the fitting came after 98 and 99 models.

Here's a photo of the block drain on my 1998 V6 engine...

    20020602 2002 V6 Block Drain.jpg
I tried to turn the bolt head but didn't have any luck, and the little pipe coming from below the bolt head was too short to attach a hose. I don't really worry about it though, for the amount of coolant still in the engine it's just not worth it.
