How To Trouble Shoot 4x4 Actuator

just replaced the 2 limit switches on the t case actuator & no luck ... will be tearing apart the front actuator again to clean it up ... it did have a bit of rust on there that I didnt really clean up

 

Do you have the part numbers for the limit switches you used?

NAPA should have them for a lot less than the stealership

 

Opened it up .... again just to clean it really good.

Tested motor and it spins just fine

Still see no issues w/ actuator

Running out of ideas on what to trouble shoot

Probably gonna do an FJ swap

 

I went through the same BS As you did replacing everything. My actuator had water in the housing and after I cleaned it out, dried it, greased it, soldered it and red sealed it, the damn things worked for one day and then failed. I threw in a used actuator and it fixed the issue.

 

Dealer replaced mine under warranty last week .

the limit switch contact area looks pitted to me, could just be the lighting in the picture. The answer to every single post in this thread is "FJ case", so there's your answer

 

I literally just soldered that stuff last night, but I keep leaning more to the side of a new FJ t case

 

, should not be soldering that part. those are where the contacts slide as the shift fork moves. Make sure you use dielectric grease on that part.

no, the 3 sliding contact plates on the bottom face of the plastic part. Did you test the front actuator with it out of the differential and plugged in just to make sure it is sliding over?

Yes I tested it out of the front differential & it moves into 4WD smoothly, but it will not slide back to 2WD unless I take my key out & move the switch to 2WD

 

So the only fix is swapping to a FJ transfer case? That seems extreme! Why is that better? My light has not come back on for about a week but i am afraid to try engage 4 wheel drive. Dont want to get stuck in 4 wheel drive. So swapping out the OEM actuator to a new OEM actuator is not fixing this ?

 

It seems like it’s the best way to fix this. FJ case is manual so you don’t need that electric bs from our trucks

not the only fix, but certainly the most cost feasible. A FJ case can be had for the cost of the replacement actuator, so why not improve when you can. No sense in throwing money in the trash can. I too myself went through 2 or 3 different fixes before I finally bit the bullet and swapped it in. Not really extreme, it's made to fit our trucks the only modification is the small hole in the floorboard.

 

You have to cut a hole in the floor board to get the 4x shifter into the cab?Looks like i am 2 wheel drive truck from now on that just seems to be ridiculous! I guess my 4x4 days are over i got like $20,000 in mods on a truck that if you cross any water will take a shit on you because of a piss poor design. I was hoping this would be my last truck for a long while thats why i modded the shit out of it!

Wow are you serious 2 holes. I think the water damage thats going to happen with those 2 holes i s good enough reason not to do it! Dont try and say it wont leak because you cant make that water tight especially if you do alot of water crossing with any current. Hope that works out for you. At this point i would rather sell my truck take the major loss in all the mods and get a Raptor be in debt for the Raptor then sink anymore money into this Tacoma That just seems to have never ending ridiculous problems. Its so fucking frustrating!

 

How come this actuator problem doesnt happen to every tacoma?
