TRD/ Magnuson 4.0 Supercharger Tips, Tricks, and Mods

Yes, I thought I followed all instructions carefully but had I not hesitated and pestered @12TRDTacoma bad stuff could have happened. The 50mm pulley appears to fit only one way. Not the case. It's in now. Maybe a placebo but things feel more solid when boost comes on.

Haven't had time to put it on. I'm working a 2nd job now. I have no garage. I'm usually tag teaming these kinds of projects to make sure they go right. Nearly bombed this one.

 

I was thinking just wiring in a light pod that comes on when I’m injecting meth. Progressive, so it doesn’t reach full brightness too early.

 

Snow has one. It's just an on/off led. Their stage 3 controller shown in my center console pic shows it in percentages. A light would be easier to see.

 

It's not placebo. That was my initial observation as well after running mine. Things just seemed to feel better "held together" for lack of better words.

So basically if I add the 50mm Chevy pulley instead of the stock one I have to grind things down? Next question, how does one grind this down?

 

@White lightning boosted any chance you can get a pic of the tensioner with belt position after install

 

I used a 4" angle grinder with a backer pad holding 80 grit sandpaper. Took 2 minutes. A dremel would work but takes longer.

You only remove a strong 1/16" of material all the way around.

Exactly.. I should make this the golden rule for this particular tensioner/ pulley combination: If it fits, you're full of shit.

 

Yea you included those in the kit I bought from you. I also see snow has that VC50 controller and failsafe all in one. Wondering if I should just use that.

 

If you tell them how happy you are with your current set up and ask nice you could get the stage 3 controller for that price.

 

That controller might actually fit into the empty DIN slot.

 

@12TRDTacoma not to inflate your ego more )) but where do we go to vote this thread of the year?

I reviewed my data from the dyno finally. Was seeing 410g/s max... so I dunno, I should have been seeing more power? That puts my personal "horsepower factor" at about 0.96. I would say it's a combination of the following:

1. Parasitic torque loss to spin the blower. Could be up to 40lbft to do so at 14-15psi, according to the charts I have.
2. The airflow is restricted in all manner of ways, before blower and after, and at the valves too.
3. Tune (yeah, yeah, go ahead and make fun of my UCon if you want to).
4. Unfavorable weather (easy to blame, just like blaming the sound guy for a shitty sound when we play shows).
5. Degrading rings leading to losses from extra blow-by. It does give off smoke near redline, sort of a middling greyish smoke that smells like burnt gasoline (not oil or coolant) - which I always attributed to richness, but could be blow-by I suppose. Will probably do a compression check in the near future to see what's up.
6. Blower needs a rebuild.
