I am gonna take the 2018 Tacoma in to the dealer next week for its first oil change and have the radar TSB recall taken care of. I was wondering if there was something that they could do about the soot at the exhaust? I had my 2004 Tacoma for 14 years and never had soot buildup at the exhaust but the new one is black at the exhaust. I'm assuming it's running rich. (Damn, I miss that truck.) Is that something they could take care of? I would think it would be covered under warranty. Thoughts? TIA.

Mine is black. I sat next to the curb, near the exhaust one time and it didn't even smell like exhaust. You're fine. If it was running rich, you'd know.

Maybe I do know. I no mechanic but it misses sometimes. I posted about it here. Maybe its related.

And, once a person had had one that wasn't black (after 14 years, did I say I miss that truck) and might be a tad anal, it might bother a person. Not necessarily talking about me. Not necessarily.

Maybe you're right. Figure it out, read short term / long term fuel trims and lambada. See if it correlates values from the factory.

I'll talk to the dealer service people first. I'll show them the poll from this thread. So far, I'm the only one with the problem.

Yes, I've had to follow the trims on my old Tacoma. Turned out it needed a MAF sensor.

While you're at it, be sure to ask this one: "Can you please make an effort not to scratch or dent my truck?"

I hear you but I guess I've done enough of that myself. I have one of the rear bumper end caps that got dented. I assumed it got done in a parking lot. It happened again to the same end cap. I must be doing it by showing bbn acking up to leave my property. Itsa a tight turnaround. I'm probably hitting brush or a chain link fence. I need to fix it. It's bothering me having to see it.

Soot on the exhaust is a result of direct injection in our engines.
This is why i recommend following the severe service interval. Soot can cause excessive wear on the timing chain among other things.

You may see some”my used oil analysis said my oil was fine at 10k. Miles” posts. Just remember, most economy used oil analysis’ don’t measure soot, and that oil analysis is intended to show the serviceability of the oil and not the wear protection it provided. Having soot particles agglomerations in your oil is easily remedies with an oil change.

Thanks for the info. This will be the trucks 1st oil change. I'll talk to them about it and keep an eye on it after the oil change.

    Good one....

    Source?

This issue is more prevalent in diesel engines. Soot particles and formations comprise the largest volume of contamination present in diesel engine oils.....

    Here you go. https://www.lubrizoladditives360.com/gdi-soot-a-new-challenge/

It is a different animal than diesel soot.
“GDI soot has been found specifically to contribute to accelerated wear on an engine’s timing chain”

If you have the 2gr FKS take a look on the underside of your tailpipe. This soot behaves different than turbo or diesel soot in its deposit pattern, physically between a sludge and diesel soot.
Higher viscosity and severe service schedule are my hedges against this.

I don’t see this as a major issue, I just change my oil at 5 k and move on with life,

48k on my 2016 (3.5 v6) and my tailpipe is clean enough to eat off from. No soot or residue at all.

    Thank you for that link.
As far as oil change intervals, I do the same.... mainly because the truck isn't 'babied'.

I had my 2018 in yesterday for its 10k service. Tailpipe is as clean as it was in day 1. Good luck!
