Question about Fox 2.5 Coilover with Resi

So my Icon shocks busted both rear reservoirs and I took it back to @4wheelparts and swapped to fox 2.5 with resi. Fox

I watched a video on how to adjust the height because it scrubs on everything I turn into. I called fix they said it should be 1.75 inches of threads at the top. Went to adjust them tonight and the unlock screw was installed in the back when they Installed the coilovers.

My question is in this picture from the factory it shows two rings at the top of the reservoir. Mine only had one on both sides. Did they mess this install up again like they did my icon install?

the factory series shocks switched to pinch bolt (what you have) rather than lock ring (the double rings) in the past year. do your shocks have the new-yet-old style "heritage" logo or the one used from the early 2k's until 2018?

880-06-418 is the model number. Sorry still new to all of this. @4wheelparts just keeps letting me down. 5 visits to get the icons right then both rear resi blew on the icon stage 3 they installed after finally getting it to stop rubbing.

Now after install it runs when I hit the brakes. Just want it done right. For $8500 for fox shocks and leaf and UCA and fuel rims and KO3 tires I would hope it would be right. Just very disappointed and have zero trust in the installers.

Why would they install it with the hex screw in the rear so it would have to be removed to adjust??? That's also a big question I had.

 

the part number would be the same before and after update, it was a running change to some models. it looks like the logo at the top of the mount is the "heritage" style logo which would have the update. the rings are ment to be adjusted with that allen bolt LOOSE, then tighten it to lock it down once you have it correctly adjusted. the old version you would adjust with the large ring against the spring and then tighten the smaller lock ring down once adjusted to keep the ring from backing off.

both version do the same thing, the allen / pinch bolt is just easier.

*disclaimer, i work for FOX... just not the auto side of the company which is 3000 miles from where i work, i am in the mountain biking part of the company... so i only kind of know what i am talking about! i don't even have fox's on my truck yet

 

This is why you do stuff yourself. they left the grub screw on the back because they are lazy or didn’t even notice.

 

They notched it but the whole screw bolted right out of the top where I circled.

 

I don't know how to do any of it.

Looks like I need to learn. Will they have to remove it then move it then reinstall and re-align?

 

OP. Pinch rings vs lock ring that all. What you’ve got is fine, but you should go back to the installer and make them rotate the pinch ring to a place where you can access the locking bolt.
As for ride height, lifting will NOT fix the rubbing, only make it happen less. (fuck knows why people believe lifting fixes rubbing on this forum). you’ll have to trim some stuff, chance offset or reduce tire size.

This just goes to show the cheap / bad design Icon is. Generic shock (one size fits all) doesn’t fit, so grind on the frame / shock mount. No Icon, redesign your fucking shocks.

 

Thank you for the reply. How do I factor offset? I'm running Fuel Maverick 17inch rims and 285x75xr17 by 9inch with KO3. They did punch weld and trim a ton of plastic. I'm running we stuff I've read on here but keep scrubbing. What else can I do?

 

Only way to change offset is to change rims. (Offset is simply the inverse of backspacing when you factor in rim width). First thing to do is to figure out where the tires are rubbing, then take action once you know the problem area. Personally I’d do that before messing with preload adjuster. (Apart from getting installer to rotate it)

Don’t let it intimidate you. These trucks seems pretty easy to work on with basic tools. But yeah seems like they’ll have to atleast half unbolt them to loosen the grub screw/Allen screw.

 

Depending on the amount of preload you are looking to get out of the coil the more risky it becomes to loosen up that allen head on the pinch ring. For the love of god and all that is holy, please lube up the threads and only loosen the allen screw enough to get that ring to twist, I have heard horror stories of that ring hopping threads and stripping the cylinder. If you have the money, I would reccomend a heavy duty mcpherson spring compressor off of Amazon, ($100ish) this will allow you to compress the spring on the shock without it on the vehicle safely (because the lack of leverage you will have without it attached, seeing as though the pinch screw is rotated to the wrong side) I have used this very tool to compress a longer and heavier spring onto my Fox's without issue, would have been impossible without it. Suspension can definitely be frustrating, but take a moment and educate yourself on how to do some of this work yourself, you will save all sorts of money, have a better understanding on the working of your vehicle and most importantly you'll take more pride in your ride. jesus Icon is fucking shit if you need to notch it just to fit your shock lol.

 

My fox are the same as yours pictured with the ring and allen key.

 

The installers did nothing wrong in this situation. They received the product from the manufacturer and put them on the truck.

The pinch both style is not designed to be adjusted while under spring load. It is doable, and people will tell you how to do it, but you run the risk of skipping threads which will be more difficult to fix. It’s not the installers responsibility to make adjusting the collar easy because it’s not supposed to be adjusted.

Additionally, if you ask/want “x” preload they are going to set it based off a measurement. Not where the set screw sits.

I agree with the bold, but I again wouldn’t recommend any Tom/Dick/Harry trying to adjust the pinch bolt style while installed on the vehicle.

 

I'm taking back to them again to have them adjust so they cant say I did something. But here are the pictures where it is scrubbing when turned and even pull into a drive way.

How are others using same shock and tire size and not getting rub? I just need to tell them what to do as they can seem to do right after multiple trips.

 

You need more caster and a CMC.
