That’s why it’s so hard for me to let go of my 2012 MacBook Pro. It’s gone through two hard drive cables, three keyboards, and a lower case. This was the last generation of MacBook that has swappable RAM and the ability to run two hard drives (also swappable). I can put 8TB of SSD and 32 GB (2x16GB) RAM if I wanted to. A laptop optioned like that from Apple nowadays is well into the sub $5,000 range.

Everything is soldered and proprietary nowadays. Can’t change anything.

Jobs would be rolling in his grave if he knew about what they did to his company.

I like the OSX environment too much, I can go without a MacBook some day but almost everyone I talk to uses iOS and iMessage it feels like it's a chore to talk to people via SMS.

I read his entire Autobiography and he was a very picky person, Woz was really the brains behind everything and Jobs was the face of it. At the unveiling of I believe the iPod, he wanted all the lights in the room to go dark but the Exit signs couldn't for obvious reasons. He threw such a fit about it until they broke fire code and had them disconnected.

He was an asshole. But he was an innovative asshole.

No, not necessarily. During the Apple II, Lisa, and Macintosh era there was plenty of aftermarket support for expansion cards. The Apple II board itself had seven peripheral slots. I own a few different ones for my II Plus and IIe. It wasn’t until the early 90’s where Apple products started to become proprietary.

Here’s some examples, none made by Apple.

Anybody could make peripheral cards for Apple Computers. I even have a card that was used as a breakout box to prototype cards. I have a whole bin of Apple II manuals, some written by Apple themselves, about how to modify the computer and add different aftermarket non Apple peripherals. Apple encouraged modification and custom applications back then.

So no. Apple hasn’t hasn’t always been proprietary. There was a point in time where Apple Computer was competing with Commodore and IBM.
