I ordered a new harmonic balancer already. I have been without a vehicle for a week and its getting old lol
I had no issue getting the OEM balancer off (slid right off) this dayco one was a tight fit so I MAY need a puller for this one

i can visibly see that the rubber has failed and the harmonic balancer has shifted forward.

I went outside and popped the hood on my 4.0 2015 Tacoma. Took a peek. Mine has a crankshaft pulley. Maybe things were different in 2008.

The first URL below shows my 2015 - crankshaft pulley - basically a spoked wheel - no rubber damper.

The 2nd shows a harmonic balancer off a 93-97 3.2L Rodeo - much bigger/thicker - partly because of all of the rubber cushioning.

im pretty sure the name is interchangable? not sure. I always called it a crankshaft pulley but it seems that when i try to find them online they are called harmonic balancers lol
The oem pulley still has rubber

Yeah...the terminology can be very confusing. People refer to A as B and vice-versa. Best of luck.

Harmonic balancer separation is common on Subarus for some reason. The belts are alway getting dragged around and jumping ribs

So you replaced the crankshaft pulley aka harmonic balancer? Dang I didn’t know that could be done. Was it hard?

No it’s very easy, but I have done it twice. Hardest part is loosing the bolt, and then tightening it back to 217 ft pounds.

You need a crank pulley holder tool. To remove it I just Bumper the starter with a breaker bar. Works every time.

The vibration damper ("harmonic balancer") should take a puller to remove and an installation tool (threaded rod) to install. It should be a press fit on the crankshaft snout in order to maximize its intended purpose of dampening crankshaft vibrations.

For a Tacoma 4.0, is a claw type puller used or does the pulley have treaded holes?

It’s a tight fit but no you do not need a puller or an installation tool

I am bringing this thread back to state I experienced the same issue with the dayco harmonic balancer /crankshaft pulley going out of alignment. I put it on a year ago when doing other work on the engine, as I saw the original had rubber that was starting to look deteriorated. Luckily I kept it, as two shredded belts later, it's back on until a new oem pulley arrives.
The difference was a full rib on the belt. It didn't like that much.
Other Tacoma owners, probably best to stay away from the Dayco pulleys/harmonic balancer, and go oem. Quality is apparently not up to the task.
