wanting to buy my first Tacoma. I found an 06 prerunner sr5 access cab, auto . The truck is pretty clean. It has 146000 miles and just wondering what are things I should look for and if it would be a good buy at 9000.00

Check the production date, after 12/05 the problematic headgaskets were remedied.

Other than that, is the frame good? General aintenance history?

President McKinley w/KLM 203P and threw the roof antenna, ICON RXT leaf spring packs (position 2), Bilsteen 5100s, ARE Camper Shell, Pop & Lock tail gate, Dash Cam
Also the head gasket issue only applied to the V6....which I'm pretty sure the one your looking at is.

Can you provide sources on this date? Have seen various dates mentioned with no proof that I have seen. Not doubting you at all, genuinely curious

Nothing concrete but I've heard from members in other posts that the headgasket part number changed in November or December of '05, after that the number of failures seemed to decline.

I don't think Toyota ever really acknowledged it so you could chalk it up to a coincidence. It also seems like the failure rate wasn't anywhere near what its made to look like. Some people make it seem like it's an inevitability in the next 100 miles on every truck from that time frame.

Part numbers usually changed after a problem is discovered and the affected part is remedied by a new version. You would need to know what production dates, etc, the prior P/N gaskets were installed in.

Check for the evil rust on the frame. Otherwise, the price doesn't sound unreasonable.

I have an '06 V6 with 266k, no head gasket problems so far. I bought it in June '06 off the lot, build date probably around a month earlier.
