Put 255/85/16s on stock OR wheels and suspension

That's exactly where I was at when I was choosing which UCA as well. If it helps at all, here's the response I got from the SPC rep when I asked about the wheel/ tire combo:

"With our control arms, we would be concerned with a wider tire on a stock wheel. Your tires appear to be taller and skinner giving us less concern but cautious because of your positive offset wheels. There are so many ways to modify your truck it is difficult if not impossible to predict the geometry for every situation. Overall my experience tells me they will probably work fine but have a contingency just in case. I know several people that have simmular setups without problems. Hope this helps"

 

What made you choose Total Chaos over SPC?

 

Honestly it was a bit of a random selection. TC was a simpler design (less initial alignment setup on my part) and appeared to give the best chance of fitting without spacers based on photos. SPC was cheaper and was discounted from Headstrong, so I could sell roughly at cost if they didn't work. Plus they gave more alignment flexibility. In the end, I had my girlfriend pick one based on those arguments. She knew basically nothing about suspension, so it was primarily a random call.

Edit: this was after a couple days of going back and forth between the two.

 

I went with the camburg. Didn’t buy the uniball because I live in the Catskill Mountains and harsh conditions require a lot of maintenance on the uca.

 

I know it's been well established that the 255s will fit on stock suspension, but I wanted to double check it will fit with lifted suspension too. I have 6112s up front getting me between 1-1.5" of lift once it settles, with stock UCAs. Will the 255s still fit? I thought I wanted to just go 265/75/16, but now I'm more seriously considering the 255s.

 

Has anyone gone the tall skinny route on the 3rd gen TRD Sport? Comes stock on 265/65/R17. I don't currently have the money to lift the truck but would like to make it a little more capable so I can start doing some of the local easier trails.

 

yes, the wheel wells and control arms and so forth are the same on all the models except perhaps the Pro.

 

I have been running 255/85r16s since January and 2885s/Billie 5100s up front since March and all has been well. I even have mudflaps.

 

Good to know. Stock gears? My major hesitation for going to 33s is needing to regear.

 

Stock gears but I do have the OVTune. Got that before I even added the tires or lift.

 

Question for people buying from online stores.....I found a local shop that will mount & balance for $20/tire but he said that road hazard would be through the online store.

Is that consistent with what you’ve come across? It makes sense and also one benefit to buying from a shop.

 

I think a big variable here is which tire you go with. Mine are Dick Cepek Extreme Country, roughly 50 pounds a tire vs 37 for stock. C or SL tires will be lighter, and I know there are E rated tires in the 60s.

Doesn't hurt to have a manual with the 4.3 rear either.

 

This is why I got 5 E rated tires... I'm skeptical any "road hazard" can damage them, and off road I need to get back out before I'm worried about tire repair. I did order mine online and have no idea what the warranty situation is, in general.

 

I want to get 5 but sounds like the KM2/3 don’t fit in the spare location on the DCLB.
That and the shitty rain characteristics of MT’s is making me lean towards the coopers.

Which tires did you get?
The three I’ve been looking at are all load range E (KM2/3 & stMaxx).

 

E range Dick Cepek Extreme Country. I've got plenty of traction control for rain situations, I'm comfortable with M/T in the rain (slow down!), and it doesn't rain much here anyways.

The 255/85 size in general needs some massaging to fit in the spare location; some people have bent the guides out of the way. I couldn't figure out how to do that and saw it would still rub the exhaust heat shield, so I relocated the spare mount towards the tail gate a skosh. Easy job as long as you can get a wrench on the top side nuts.

 

I hear you on the traction issue.

Do you know the outer diameter of those tires?
I think someone posted about how they did that.
It still seems odd to me that the long bed has less room than the short bed.

 

The Extreme Countrys? For the 255/85 I believe it's 32.8" but I haven't actually verified it myself, just read it off their website.

 

That’s similar to the coopers.
The KMs are 33.3 & 33.1

 

I've pretty much landed on getting the Coopers, but which one? I'm looking online and they have two. One appears All Terrain , the other is not.

 

They look completely identical, price is identical, size/load/speed source are identical. Puck the one that is more honest, better customer service rep or ships faster
