Ah, I was gonna go try and figure out where to start with night pictures this week.

How’s long of exposures do you guys typically do?

 

I took 10, 5 second exposures, 400 ISO @ 2.2g. Then I stacked them using Sequator.

Last night I took 10, 10 second exposures and could see a little bit of the Milky Way but I wanted some trees in my photo instead of just the sky so I scrapped those pics.

Felt the same about mine. I hate that there is a difference between my computer monitor and phone screen!

Good place to start for shutter speed

Crop camera:
500 / (1.5 x focal length)

Full frame:
500 / focal length

 

Alas I didn't see anything in the dark this week 150 miles was too far to go to look under rocks for scorpions.

I try to keep my ISO down, eliminates some of the noise
Fan of shooting architecture, night or day,
just don't do it enough!!!!

 

I usually use a mid range f/8, iso as low as I can use and try to keep it under 30 seconds. Mainly because I don’t want to get the remote timer out and hook it up sometimes. Lol

Under 30 seconds because that’s all the camera will do on its own. I shoot a full frame so if you’re shooting crop it could vary a small amount. You may need to open the f stop up a little more. I manual focus using the digital zoom on the screen.

 

It's crazy how drastically different they are. I feel like I have to overexpose the photo to make it look right on a dang phone haha

Nice work everyone! You guys stepped up to the plate and I hope you learned something with this challenge. Low light photography is a great challenge to learn. It also can come in handy when you have a large crowd but you don’t want all the people in it. A long exposure with basically make people disappear.

Example: there are people all over in the photo below. If you look close you’ll be able to see the ghost image of some of them that stood in one place too long during the photo.

F/7.1 ISO 100 30 seconds at 34mm on a crop frame.
