Do NOT pull in reverse. That’s a good way to wreck your diff.

Oops. Why is pulling in reverse bad for the diff? Front or rear diff or both?

I use reverse because the weight is in the front and I like to watch

#metoo. Seems like better traction is obtained by pulling in reverse since the weight of the engine is closer to the load.

Pulling heavy loads in reverse is bad for a manual transmission because reverse works by using a small idler gear between the input and output shafts so they are not directly connected like they are when moving forward. Put too much stress on the idler and it will break. I am not sure about automatic transmissions.

Hypoid gears in differentials are cut so that they can withstand a heavy load in ONE direction (forward) but not so much in the other direction.

Hypoid ring and pinion gears have a drive side and a coast side. The coast side teeth are angled a lot more, which causes more force trying to push the gears away from each other when putting the power down in reverse. Tacos use a high pinion front axle, so that is driving on the drive side of the teeth going forward also. There are plenty of trucks made with low pinion front axles which drive on the coast side going forward.

So, the million dollar question. Are you applying enough force to destroy the gears in reverse when pulling a stump? If you're getting that violent with the stump, you probably should be using a different piece of machinery. So, there you have it. The gears are weaker in reverse than forward.

I believe the front drive shaft is also weaker and will break before the rear one will also. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Did this once but it was with an Isuzu cab over with a long flatbed so no real potential for YouTube glory. Only way I’d try this with a personal truck is if I owned a deuce and a half.

I couldn't dig a rose bush root system by hand unless I wanted to spend 6 hours doing so. It had offshoots in 5 different places in a large garden, main roots were 5" across. Tore it out with a bit of climbing webbing and my hitch and had a blast. Definitely not necessary, but fun nonetheless because it made a comical dust cloud as it got torn out lol

I used my winch to remove an old peach tree at our rental with little effort but it was three 4" to 6" trunks. Make sure you soak the ground well and cut as much of the root structure as you can.

Update! 4 stumps removed so far. Just take a mattock and swing away at most of the big roots then tore them out no problem with truck.

Not that long ago farmers would blow tree trunks when clearing fields. You could buy dynamite at the local farm implement store.

Drive shafts don’t care which way they spin. So while your statement is undoubtedly true it doesn’t apply here. It’s bc of the gears first and foremost (some transmissions secondly) but if you’re not shock loading the teeth it’s probably not going to break anything. Still the cautious approach would be to pull forward or use a winch if you can’t back up to it for some reason.
The argument that the windshield is stronger is laughable at any rate because if you’re bright enough to figure that out you should also figure a way not to bust ANY windows

My dad used to pull stumps all the time. Of course it was a '78 F250 with a 460 V8 but they came right out with hardly any throttle at all.

It was very satisfying to watch for some odd reason.
