All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!

Guys guys.. Pros and Cons on Rotopax vs Jerry cans? I'm trying to figure out if I'm going to be mounting rotopax on bed rack or getting Jerry cans on the bumper :boink:

Falken Wildpeaks? Those get some good ratings. What size did you go with?

Don't do an AAL, get a leaf pack. Lots of folks with AAL ditch it later and get a pack. AAL may be a good short term solution, but you'll probably be looking to upgrade again soon. If you're just looking for height for better clearance, you can always just do a block for now. It's not the best, but it's definitely the cheapest way to get a bit more clearance.

I love my OME Dakar Heavies. They handle my truck's fat ass and my tendency to overpack well.

Guys! I want to install a Prinsu Toprac on my A.R.E Overland. It has the standard Yakima (or similar) roof rails. The mounting feet are already on the rack. I just need to mount the rack to the camper now.

I have a slight clue of the hardware I need (Nut plates, bolts, lock washers, etc) but can’t figure out specifics or where to buy. Not interested in doing a Home Depot Chinese fire drill.

The guys at Prinsu simply told me it’s supplied when you buy the rack. I see no option to buy separate from them.

Edit: Does Yakima Landing Pad hardware do the trick?

    Thanks in advance

The original beetle was designed (at least in part) by Ferdinand Porsche....

I have no first hand experience with either, so this is purely speculation. It really boils down to your anticipated use and needs.

Rotopax are plastic and Jerry cans are typically metal. I don't know that either one is better, but I know that my plastic gas cans expand and contract depending on where they are located. Since they will be in the sun almost all day, temperature fluctuation will happen. I'd probably prefer metal there.

Rotopax are typically either 2 or 4 gallon, I believe. Jerry cans, I think, are 5 gallon. There is an obvious benefit to having more fuel, but let's be honest. How often are you so far off the grid that you need that much spare fuel? Even on my longest offroad weekends, I haven't used a full tank of gas. In most scenarios, I would think that 2 gallons would be more than enough. Even if you only get 15 mpgs, that's 30 miles of travel to get to a gas station.

Both are going to get you "expo AF points." The jerry cans are more utilitarian and the rotopax look "cleaner" (IMO) and are more instafab. So this kind of just goes along with whichever look you want to achieve.

Both can be found on CL for steep discounts of what you would pay online or in store.

Keep in mind that you don't want to keep gas in them on the truck "long term." You should be rotating the fuel at the very least. Realistically, they shouldn't be on the truck with extra fuel unless you are going out for a weekend where you might need them.

In the past, I've just thrown a 5 gallon gas can in the bed if I thought it would be needed and called it a day.

I'm in this camp. If you can save up for a full pack, do it. Though, you can usually sell an AAL later too. I bought mine for $80 and sold it for $50 when I upgraded to the full Dakar pack.

Look at this post and the one under. Shows a clear view of what brackets are used and how they mount.
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NB5X99U

These will work also. Not sure if you want to pay over $20/ mount:

Edit: I have no experience with that rack or any others. I have a shell, with tracks and 2 cross bars with landing pads similar to what you have. This is just what I've come across doing research when I was thinking about a rack.

Yes, the Landing Pad hardware should do the trick.

However, you can buy the hardware without having to buy the landing pad (which I don't think you will use.) Among other places, eTrailer sells the parts. In the track, Yakima uses a small flat plate with a threaded hole. The plate slides in the track, anywhere you need it to be. Run a bolt through the rack foot, thread it into the plate, tighten and you are good.

    Not often enough!

In the South, I have not needed the extra fuel in my cans - I don't always carry them, either. However, on trips out West, I have used and needed my extra fuel. Think about where you are going, and how long you will be there.

I use metal fuel cans. I think they are more durable than plastic (excluding Scepter military cans). The metal do expand slightly when hot like the plastic, just not as much.

I've got Rotopax mounted to my Prinsu and as long as you don't fill them to the top they won't expand too much. They have a fill line that you're not supposed to go over so that when gas does expand it has room for it. I wouldn't worry about expanding for Rotopax, I've had mine on for years without issue.

However I don't always have gas in them, I only fill them up when I'm going camping/wheeling. It's more of a precaution type thing, I did get my Rotopax stuff for like 40% off tho so that certainly played a part
