Just got my 10k done and had similar discussions. I have a non-oem grille, and I cut the bumper to put in a LoPro and winch. So they called me back into the shop almost immediately, and had me sign this waiver.

When I read it, it sounded like they were gonna turn this system off and not do the work. But the shop guy said what actually happens is they do the software update, slap a piece of “water proof” on the sensor, and if anything else in the future goes wrong it’s a customer-pay issue and the warranty is void on that.

So, I might be regretting that later however my 18 slammed on its brakes while getting ready to pass a semi when it’s own lane was clear, and did it again on an open highway before the upgrade. In general I treat this system like a back up though, I don’t trust it much it’s just convenient to know it might help me out if I’m driving like a dumbass. I try not to tho ;)

Man this is just wrong, all Toyota owners should unite, they will change their tune. This is the problem when a auto maker gets too big and confident.

Welp my sensor died from all the rain in June. Got the "clean sensor" a few times in a couple weeks then totally quit working. I knew I wasn't gonna get an appt on such short notice before we left for vacation so I drove 2400 miles without it. Kinda sucked cuz it's nice to have.

Anyways I got an appt at the dealership & they said they would order the sensor. 2 weeks later I show up & they don't have it but do the software update & the sticky pad thing. I get a call that it's fixed & the tech said it's working after he drove it. So I pick it up & 1st thing I notice is the orange PCS off light near the temp gauge is on as soon as I turn the truck on. Usually it doesn't come on till I drive a block or 2. So I decided to take it to the interstate to test out. The radar worked which it wasn't at all before. I set the cruise only for it to fail in a couple miles. No big deal but I had people behind me & the truck slowed down quite quickly!

I take it back to explain what it's doing & they make sure they have a new sensor coming & told me they will call when it comes in so I can schedule an appt. Got to talk to the tech & he said it would only take an hour to swap out then do the calibration on the radar. Hopefully there isn't a national backorder on these radar sensor with as many Tacoma's are having this issue!

Do you have a stock grill or a pro grill?

Stock grill. Worked flawless for the 1st year even in heavy snow & rain. Guys at the dealership were cool with me & seemed to handle it well for a busy Monday morning so I'm hoping they can get it working again. I drove to Black Hills SD last year & I ended up really liking the adaptive CC out on the highway

Hopefully you get the replacement that has the vent holes on the back - it seems to be the improved part which does not need the bogus sticky pad fix done to it. When they do replace it take a look at it, you'll know if it's a updated version if it has 3 small vent holes in the recessed area on the back:

    UNSUBBED from this.

Everyone should take the time to chat with your service folks.

    1. CALL YOUR DEALERSHIP
    2. ASK Them if you might have an issue
    3. CALL YOUR DEALERSHIP!!!

If you have modifications that impact YOUR truck then ask about them

    It is that simple.

Sorry...but it is NOT that COMPLEX.

Trust me, I know, Just CALL your dealer, if they do not want to "adjust or fix" your TSS then literally WALK AWAY!

    It isn't cosmic...

Thanks for posting that. I had seen that months ago but couldn't remember how the hierarchy thing went for the holes or no holes. Mine doesn't have the holes & I did get the sticky pad umbrella thingy

    20190729_213356.jpg

Also I think there's different part #'s & someone has posted them but I'm not sure what thread

    Ok bye-bye

    This is a "discussion" forum.

Stop by a big dealership when they are busy as hell & try to leisurely talk about your messed up vehicle. Call & all you might get is an appt. They ain't gonna "talk" about what may or may not be wrong with your vehicle without looking at first. People are coming here to find answers BEFORE they go to the dealership & get turned away. No one wants to deal with that

I'm not sure what your lil rant is about but when you have multiple part #'s, different grill scenarios & truck heights this thing does get a lil complex. Personally I understand Toyota's liability issue & trying to keep people happy which is damn near impossible. Obviously Toyota doesn't really know how to handle it with the sticky pad bandaid fix

Nope. Same part number. I think Toyota Corp is being slick by keeping the same number - my guess is that they never intended on fixing the problem right on vehicles that were susceptible to water intrusion. That's why the repair sheet has the tech look for the vent holes - the radar with the vent holes doesn't risk water intrusion and doesn't get the stupid cushion. Only a reprogram - supposedly. The sheets posted to this forum didn't have the pages listing what else was done in the case the radar unit had the vent holes...

I think the right thing for them to have done was to REPLACE the problem units - the ones getting this bogus repair. Too bad they took the route they did.

How long did the recall take for your service center to do? I don’t have time to just wait all day for the truck

It took me about 15 min on the phone with my dealership.

I set up the appt and worked with them.

Do yourself a favor and CALL your dealer and let them know your expectations.

I don't know for sure but someone posted awhile back that there was 2 part #'s & listed them. Then the troubleshooter shows that the one with holes doesn't get the "cushion" but the ones without do. Doesn't make any sense if they believe that this is the entry point for moisture! Maybe the should put a drain plug in it

Supposed they just flashed new TSB, test drove down the street, called me to say it is working again & to come pick it up. New sensor was supposed to be there but it wasn't & needed to be ordered again. Probably ended up on someone else's truck that had an earlier appt. Oh well :notsure:

Mark your old one. If they tell you they switched it out then you will know for sure. My dealer straight lied to me - said they did. Nope - they didn't. Another guy here also marked his old one. - dealer told him they switched it out - nope they lied too.

Good idea I'll do that. I've heard that time & time again so I didn't even use my ToyotaCare & did it all myself. I feel like I have a pretty good dealership & they have treated me pretty good but do I really wanna chance going XX,XXX miles on the factory oil. NOPE!

Had the TSB done yesterday. I'm lifted and on 33s and have never had a TSS fault. They slapped that piece of foam on the back of the sensor and called it good. I didn't have to sign or disable anything.
