2019 Tacoma sport painted fender flares. Two body shops can’t paint right and application.

does anyone know how Toyota paints the Factory ones. Two body shops can’t get the painting process right, so three look different totally different. It’s been in the shop for a month all over over one right side front fender flare.

 

You can try wrapping them if consistency is an issue with your paint shop

 

Could be the shops painter doesn’t have the know how.

 

What makes them different? Is it the paint match or the finish (i.e. orange peel)?

 

The shops are reputable here in the Bay Area, but it’s the finish they come with. The colors are off from the bodies and thats stock right from the factory. They come from the factories with like one coat on the fenders and it’s the same fenders that are on the pros. But to prep the fenders for paint that it changing the color of the fenders. I wish I could get the process they use when they paint them in the factories.

 

Paint them flares trim black and call it good!

 

Bro no way. It’s a sport for a reason and it’s 3 months old. There has got to be some way to find this out. Plus the body shop scratched and they’ve spend 2k on trying to get it done. I think it’s just that hard to get them back to factory

 

They could paint all 4 at the same time with same batch of paint?

 

My understanding is that they do paint them with the same batch but, the flares still look different.

 

Something does not sound right?? Find another shop.

Also the shop can call in the regional paint rep to look at it.

 

Why don’t they just paint all four the same color and call it good? Unless the color matching is awful, then I’d suggest talking to them about repainting all four instead of trying to match the factory paint.

Metallic paints are a bitch to match. Viewing angle plays a part. I'd try EuroCal in Santa Rosa.

 

This^ It's called "paint flop"; i.e. the way the metallic flakes lay in the paint. When the truck was originally painted, the flakes all fell consistently across the body of the truck. Now going back for a re-paint, it's a much tougher job, especially with high flake colors like silver.

A good painter knows how to compensate for this.

I'm an "old guy". Been having body and paint work done on my cars, trucks and motorcycles for over 50 years. All work done by highly reputable shops. Once I even used a very high end restoration shop. Perfect paint matches can be very hard to come by...especially metallics. Several times I insisted on "do overs" and things got worse. Sometimes "good enough" simply has to be "good enough".

 

Silver and white are always the hardest colors to match. I would find a different body shop. You can get good results but it takes time and expertise to tint paint. You could find a paint store and start there. The process for color match is find the paint code, there are variance cards and you find the closest one and will probly have to match from there. Is your body shop using water based paint?

 

Could always just buy new OEM ones.

 

Who’s going to spend 2500 to match one?
