During the Fall/Winter, I’m on Lake Lanier chasing topwater fish. In the summer, they can be found in the rivers trying to find cooler water.

Cool, topwater for such a big fish sounds fun. I'm in Knoxville so I've spent some time on the Clinch looking for them this summer but haven't had any luck. In your local rivers, are you running a full sinking line and chunking shad imitations or what?

Depending on river current/depth, I usually throw an intermediate line with a lead eye fly or a shorter sink tip (5-15 ft sink tip) and a non-weighted fly. I’ve found that in some rivers, being able to mend a floating running line allows better fly/depth control than a full sink.

As for flies, I like clousers and other basic bait flies. Usually stuff that’s pretty easy to tie... Because I tend to lose quite a few to rocks and wood. Speaking of which, striper love any type of cover and current breaks. I’d focus on that and any deeper holes. Shoals and the pools above them are usually good spots to hit.

River Stripers are a lot tougher to find vs lake fish that are blowing up on top with gulls diving on them! I think river fishing for them is definitely a game of odds - cast enough times to likely areas and eventually you’ll get a tug.

Solid info! Yeah gulls go a long way in identifying fish. The only way I've spotted them in the river is when they run right under the boat, and then it's often too late. I'll keep pounding cover and deep holes and post back once I've had some success.

I think it’s because it is so close to Atlanta. It probably gets more visitors than any other lake in GA. Couple that with the fact that most visiting aren’t very experienced boaters and then they mix in a ton of alcohol, and you end up with a lot of accidents.

That’s why I only fish it in the fall and winter!

Do it. 8wt IMO, is one of the most versatile weights out there. I use mine for big trout, smallmouth, largemouth, redfish, snook, and various other species. Which rod are you looking at?

I picked up an echo base 8wt for this very reason. But i'm more of a trout guy and don't throw streamers a whole lot. So i wanted a decent 8wt for when i do, that's why i went with the echo.
