Looking at putting a levelling kit on my TRD Sport - 3" front, 2" rear. I'm having some trouble getting consistent answers on what size of wheel/tire combo I should use. I'd like to put on 20x9 wheels (+20 offset) with 275/55R20 or 265/60R20 off road tires. I've heard that going too much larger than the stock sizes can negatively impact braking, and I'm wondering if these sizes might result in rubbing. Not looking to impress any serious off roaders, I'm just a 40 year old dad trying to make his truck look a little more cool. Any help is appreciated, cheers.

So going from stock to 33's. From what I've read on here, that's the size you'll start notice differences in drivetrain performance (holding gears at hwy speed, overall engine performance). Not sure how much braking performance will be affected, probably not much.

To me, 20's on a midsize truck looks ridiculously stupid. 18's and 31-32" tires at most. Or just paint the stock rims black.

Yeah, that's why I was leaning toward the 275/55R20's. 31.9" to keep the diameter below 33", but then it's a touch wider so I'm not sure if they'll rub or not at a +20 offset.

It's preference, I've seen 20's on a few Tacoma's and I think it looks sharp. 18's look good too.

Good to be a dad! The cool look style is up to you, performance is a different topic. I have 33s on my truck with a more conservative lift than your planning. I choose (for my unique definition of looks and maybe performance) to keep the rake when I lifted. I also choose carefully to match my suspension upgrade to my driving habits.

The 33s do affect the 5th 6th gear hunting indigenous to these trucks. I solved that with a ShiftSense Pro and may someday regear with a conservative approach.

Braking is impacted with large tires: because of the more aggressive tread they do lock up more and chatter more on straight on panic stops. The abs does not activate as quickly, nor as often, but being a dad older than you I still know how to pump the brakes.

Here is what I ended up with:

Truck looks great, thanks for the info! Yeah, I've been contemplating the rake as well. I've heard that levelling can impact fuel economy and handling, to what extent I'm not sure. I have a friend with a 2nd gen that said he barely noticed. Anyway, appreciate the feedback. Based on this I'll likely keep a lower profile tire if I decide to go for the 20's to keep the diameter less than 33".

On a side note, I really like the skid plates on the new TRD Pro's, may have to take the air dam off my sport and swap it out.
