I agree the protection is worth it, the only reason I use my debit for gas is that Arco only takes debit (or cash, which I'm bad about carrying). Yeah I could go elsewhere and use my credit card but Arco is usually the cheapest Top Tier gas around here by a long shot, and my truck is thirsty for 91.

In several years I've had two issues with my debit card getting compromised and both times Chase refunded me the full amount as soon as I brought it to their attention. Once was for <$100 but the first time it was for nearly $2500. Some asshole swiped my info in CA and used it to pay a car title loan in TX. Never had to wait on them for it, they refund it right away and then "investigate" and then I get a letter saying their investigation is complete in a few weeks.

Really the smart thing for me to do in this situation is to start carrying cash around and using that at Arco instead

My debit card has the same protection as my credit card so I'll use either or.

yeah I've never had any issues with my bank getting my money back from a skimmer, it's been as easy as doing it with a credit card.

I guess the advantage I see to a credit card is cancelling a purchase if you have to for some reason, since they money doesn't go through right away like with debit. Also rewards points I suppose if you have a card that offers them

True, but then just use cash and pocket the rewards since most gas is cheaper if paying cash.

Yeah I have a bad habit of never carrying cash. I don't know why I just feel like it's safer in my bank account than in my pocket, which is a pretty fucked up mentality now that I think about it haha. In some respects, not in others.

I never carry cash anymore. I find managing it harder even though it isn't. I guess physically seeing my money disappear vs not is comforting.

Yeah I feel like I'm more likely to spend cash vs using my card. But I don't know if that's really true. It might be more like what you say, watching cash visibly disappear.

My wife carries cash and uses it primarily if she can, any time we're out and she uses her card she always does the 'cash back' thing at the register. I can probably count on both hands how many times I do that in one year lol.

I usually take out cash for festivals and such where it's cash only and I don't want to pay the ATM fees and road trips.
