Went to a Toyota dealer in Phoenix to look at a TRD Pro I saw online advertised for $39.995. At the dealer the big sticker on the windshield says $46,995, more than sticker price new and this is a 2017 with 28k on it. So I already knew who I was dealing with. They have this BS "Complete car package" for $435 that includes assistance if your identity is stolen in the next 5 years (not protection or monitoring), paintless ding removal, $5,000 if your truck gets stolen in the next 5 years and is not recovered... And let's not forget anti-bacterial treatment for your vehicle that applied once a year will prevent organic compounds and associated odors from returning to your vehicle. Who buys this crap? If you went inside the dealer to buy an accessory, say a Toyota license plate frame for $15, and on your way to the register you saw a certificate on the shelf that had that stuff on there and the price tag was $435, would you take it up to the counter with you and buy it? If the answer is no, then why buy it when you're buying your vehicle?

The majority of buyers are not educated in things like this and these are the people that are preyed upon. The dealers are betting on these people buying this which is a win win for them. If you are smart enough to know better then theres 10 people out there that arent that they can sell it to.

I walked out on a deal because the truck had some extras on it that I was not going to pay for. I said remove them or at least drop the price to invoice price, "real invoice". Thanks to TW I knew what real invoice was. As I walked out they were trying to get me to stay, I said it was too late, you have shown me what kind of dealership you have here.

What dealer? I have bought 2 tacomas at the same dealership in the East Valley and have paid $0 for the dealer add ons. I basically said they can keep them or they can throw them in at the negotiated price (always negotiate price first before messing with add ons). Both times they threw everything in at the negotiated price. 2017 TRD OR was purchased for invoice. 2019 TRD Pro was purchased for around $500 under MSRP with $1k over my lease buyout on the TRD OR.

Addendum stickers are common for some dealers. Obviously added to increase profit. I am in the southeast region and we get regional add-ons that are "port" installs. These are actually added to the Monroney sticker making it harder to negotiate away. My truck had a cigarette adapter and couple of USB cables that was a $95 tech package. To make things worse the dealer does their nonsense and added floor mats, pin stripes, and something else for an extra $995. In my case I had a port install of all weather mats followed by the dealer adding on additional mats. I paid much less than sticker, but they left their addendum nonsense on the contract so after all was said and done I asked for my floor mats. The sales manager smiled and said "here they are, already installed" I said "no the second set that you charged me for" pointing out that it was on both stickers. I said "if you are going to charge me twice for them, you have to give me two sets". I then reminded him that if he was going to gouge people with the silly addendum sticker that he has to provide what he is advertising. He walked away groveling never to return, but the salesperson was quickly called away and emerged with a second set.

This shouldn't be a part of the negotiation because I don't want to purchase it at all. So the dealer shouldn't be acting like they've done me such a favor by taking some or all of them off and therefore can't bring the price down any.

And what kind of dealership is that? A dealership trying to make money? Sounds like you had them ready to deal but you walked anyway. Can’t really blame a business from trying to make a profit can you?

I don’t do add-ons myself, but I’m sure there are people who will gladly pay for the convenience and don’t care all that much about the extra cost. The more power to them.

I can understand why some people do pay for some add ons like running boards, skid plates, meaty tires, bed step, aftermarket leather and the like. It's safe to say that not everyone is a weekend wrenching warrior they just want to sign and drive.

There's a clear line between add ons and let me bend you over for some wheel, fabric and paint coverage add ons.

i've reread what you asked 3 times before posting...1 question are you meaning "add ons" in the paperwork when signing the finance side ( extra coverage in protection of some sort) or "add-ons" to the vehicle you hand pick or get tossed on and added to the price?....1 part deals with finance add ons and the other is add ons from the dealer as far as actual parts...

None of those things you mentioned involves intense wrenching. Running boards bolt on and take maybe 10 minutes per side at most to install. Skid plate? 15 minutes tops. Meaty tires? Almost any tire company will charge less. People are mostly paying for laziness. Which is fine, but that’s not me.

Agreed, but you can't do those things and only see a $2 increase in your monthly payment. People financing their laziness.

“wheel locks...I didn’t ask for wheel locks and I don’t want them. So how about you go ahead and take those bad boys off.
While you’re at it, you can take the
D-rings and exhaust tip off too. And the $240 floor mats? Don’t need those either”
“Oh you can’t take them off you say? Well you can take them off the deal then”
“Oh you can’t do that either? Well then i guess you can’t sell a vehicle today”
“You are already giving me a free detail, and a free tank of gas, and all these free danish and coffee while I wait. Of course you can do it. Ok, ok I’m sorry for being difficult, but how about this....go over there and tell your boss that you’re going to kill a deal over a couple hundred in add-on’s and see what he says. I will be over here waiting, eating the free danish and using the WiFi”

After I negotiated my price on a whole truck I then told them I didn't want the running boards and the dealer took them off of the truck and the price after a bit of negotiation. My truck had just arrived on the lot so they did not have a chance to add the 600 dollar window tint, but they can keep that as well I wouldn't pay for it.

My wife and I bought a Nissan Armada years ago, the whole process was a shit show. We were paying cash, they insisted that we needed to fill out a credit app per the “Patriot act” I thought my wife was going to start knife handing people as she started quoting why did not need to. It continued down from there, would have left but it was the car she wanted and only Nissan dealer in like 75 miles. By the end I had them taking of the dealership stickers or they were going pay me $1200 (figured the standard loan length was 60 months at $20 a month) to advertise for them. Needless to say I don’t buy add-ons. My wife won’t go car shopping with me anymore, it’s just a thing and I am not emotionally attached, I am emotionally attached to our money.

Took a while to find a truck with the least possible dealer add-ons in my area. They all have them to some extent. Mine had the 24/7 alarm system, and all weather floor mats (which I wanted anyway) but what it had that I noticed wasn't on the sticker nor was mentioned by the salesman was a clear bra as well as clear protective film in the door handle wells, and behind the wheels to protect from rocks being kicked up.

Otherwise i'd walk away. I don't want 99% of the crap they add on.
