3rd Gen Poll: Rear End Noise howling when feathering throttle

Maybe I got lucky. Had the whine since new, never been too loud but annoying.

Got the TSB done about 10k miles ago, it quieted down to the point it was barely noticed during regular driving. Just got new tires recently at 22k miles and I just noticed I haven't heard the whine for awhile. Tried to reproduce it with the radio off, windows open and then closed. Mine is gone/quiet enough where road noise drowns it out.

New tires aren't even that loud as I got Michelin defender ltx. I did a search and found others where new tires didn't do anything, kinda a mixed bag.

 

I just got the rear end replaced on my 2018 Offroad....the noise is still there. It may be a little quieter, but it isn't much. They did manage to add more adhesive to my hood and it doesn't flop anymore, but they also added a slight dent in the same area, ughh.

None of their fixes did anything for the fuel pump noise I have over 20 mph.

 

Is the fuel pump noise the oneyou hear when you open the rear cab sliding window?

Sounds kind of like a hiss/woosh amidst sloshing liquid. I thought it was my pinion bearing or something. It comes out of the soace between the cab and the bed. It only sounds once over a certain speed.

 

Yes, I only hear it with the rear window open. It sounds like an old dying or super cheap electric fuel pump to me. Much like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3qpcnGl7sk only not near as loud.

It only seems to make noise over 20 mph and you can hear it all the way up to 75 or so where the wind noise drowns it out. If you pop it into neutral it still makes the noise.

Thanks, brother. It has been irritating. They sent me the buyback paperwork and I ignored it. I have a dying family member (close) and I don’t need or have time for this crap. I’m just going to sell it and sell my NIB Rays and new Wildpeaks. I never mounted them. Glad to hear you are pleased with yours and I hope you are doing well.

I'm back again after taking a break from these forums. I only recently started looking again, because my co-worker was interested in a 3rd gen Tacoma. I showed him my summary of events from my lemon law suit. He's seen enough evidence on the forums here and from me to avoid it like the hot steaming turds they are. He's going to purchase a 2nd Gen TRD soon.

Myself? I went back to a 2014 Nissan Xterra 4x4. for 16k, I get a proven Nissan VQ40DE 4.0 ( full disk brakes) and upgraded radiator without the SMOD. I can't believe Toyota is still pumping these out with the rear differential issues. Looks like a design flaw, or poor QC, perhaps even poor metallurgy? Incorrect backlash, drive line angle.? Nobody really knows.

To date, I don't think any 3rd gen owner has actually gone to trial with Toyota Motor Corp to actually discover what the root cause is.. If a half way decent lawyer files a case, they'll usually agree to a buy back.

 

Just thought I'd repost this because it is an outstanding post. What you are saying, and what your rear end specialist said, makes sense to me. It would explain why the issue keeps returning for people who have had their rear diffs replaced, and why Toyota's previous TSBs were aimed at quieting the issue, rather than fixing what they believe is not an actual problem that would impact reliability and/or safety (both of which would be liabilities for Toyota).

I was on the fence about whether or not to take my truck in for the rear howl, but I may hold off for now. If it gets worse, or I notice a change of symptoms I will take it in. For now though, I am reasonably convinced the noise is inherent in design of these diffs.

 

I hope they’ll sell.

We just bought a new Subaru Forester Touring for my daughter and my wife loves it so we are ordering her one. We also sold our Yukon XL because we have had 2 kids get married in the last 2 months and another one off to college so we no longer need the family school buses. .

As bad as I hate to I guess I’m going full-size and getting the Silverado Trailboss, but we will see.

 

This is an easily winnable case. I’ve been an attorney for over 20 years and could easily smoke them, just as my friends have (unintended acceleration cases), BUT life matters have taken priority for me and this type of disdain for a truck is just not healthy for me. I’m glad you like that Xterra.

I’d like to see Toyota really fix this issue because I’d buy another one if they did. I still might (short bed this time) and take my chances and then regear if the howling starts. I’ve just had a lot going on and haven’t had time for argue with corporate, but I’m to the point of put up or shut up with them, and I have more important things to worry about.

 

Understood. Toyota knows the litigation game well. The fact of the matter is nobody has died from a " whinning rear diff" NHTSA has a obligation to step in when its considered a " safety" issue. Toyota must know it's not a catastrophic failure that likely, but a failure of QC or shoddy gearsets. This isn't a a Boeing 737 MAX which the NTSB or FAA would investigate root cause failure.

It'd be interesting to find what internal documents Toyota has through discovery. I don't think anyone has ever gone that far. A buy back happens and the plaintiff is happy.

Toyota doesn't make their diffs, it's a contractor. Hino motors LTD.

First it was the leaking gasket, then the whining rear differentials. Toyota deployed a smoke screen and cited " pillars or vibration from the leaf springs". It would be devastating if their best selling truck had two recalls.

So you just keep pumping them out like a runaway freight train...

 

Understood. My friends got them for over $30 million. My job and life are too busy to worry with this now and all I’d get would be a buyback and attorney fees. I’d rather just move on but when my family situation resolves I might think differently.

 

This is an update for my truck condition. After replacing rear differential at 3700 miles the noise reduced to very low level and only at certain speed(58 mph). I drove another 1500-1600 miles and it seems that noise is getting louder again.

 

I assume you lose more money when you sell a car vs company buyback using lemon law wouldn't you? In my case, I will easily lose $5k-$6k if I want to sell it now and it is only 8 months.

 

LL is the way to go. I have LL’d several in the past but my work and family life was just too busy to worry with it. I sold mine to Carvana for $3K less than I paid and drove it 31 months. My caseload is just too heavy to handle fighting with yet another big corporate entity. If you want to LL yours just lawyer up and you’ll get a buyback. Best of luck.
