Hey guys, long time lurker, new member, looking for and info on converting my 2017 to diesel, looking at the cumming R2.8 or 4BT. anyone have any experience with this type of swap, I'm heading into what I can only tell as pretty virgin territory. am wondering about fuel mileage does it go up or down, hauling, what are the draw backs?

Given the amount of computer control associated with a modern Tacoma, *I* think you're in for a phenomenal amount of work, maintenance headaches, etc., etc., etc.

Find a tacoma with a totaled title from some crazy over the top hydro lock with a trashed tranny and grenaded diffs to offset the 32k price tag conversion.

Or get the ovtune turbo or supercharger and spend 5k.

Cummins, and a drawback would be weight.

People make more complicated than it really is, If you can find a motor that somewhat fit in the engine bay, may be get an adapter plate to mate the engine with the transmission that will be the hard work. The tedious work will be the wire merge so you can use the Toyota electronics with the ECM from the diesel engine. Pretty much it will be the Toyota how it stands with the Diesel engine, and of course don't forget that the fuel system needs to be re-done.

I’ve never done one, but i’ve seen many Cummins conversions in many different vehicles. Some of the old Cummins 12 valve 6BT’s can be made to run in anything with only a couple of wires, a cable and a trip to the machine shop for an transmission adaptor plate. I don’t think an old 4BT would be any harder to install. Like others have said though, the hard part would be the dash and the electronics, they’d prob never work properly without the help or some electronic engineer and a ton of cash.

The mechanical logistics and cost are just some of the factors, and I think you're grossly underestimating the complication of the task at hand.

Even IF the OP can make this Frankenstein work, what happens if he a.) wants to sell it at some point (who's going to want this abortion?) or b.) he gets into a wreck and his insurance company wants to total the truck...how much money do you think he'll get for it? Answer...not much.

If I had an extra 33k kicking around I would this in a heartbeat. Maybe when my midlife crisis hits I will do this instead of buying an old car or a new boat!

I'm still unsure why the OP wants to do this in the first place. What will this accomplish for you?

The Cummins 2.8 sucks and the 4BT is built to be used in a box truck or delivery van; both are poor choices for the Tacoma.

Yeah, but it's a diesel. You need a diesel for overland expeditions, carrying all your tactical overland gear for your overland expeditions. Overland

I know you're joking but on a serious note don't most real overland guys now prefer gas?? I'm talking like around the world expedition go ANYWHERE type vehicles.... I've heard diesel can be hard to come across in many remote areas of the world and also diesels don't do well in extreme cold??

Could be outdated info I've never looked into it much but spoke with a few guys gearing up for S. America -> Africa expedition and they specifically chose gas model land cruisers and said that was why :notsure:

Just Googled it and a stock, pre-1998-4BT puts out 105-HP/265 lbs-ft; post-1998-4BT puts out 170HP/420lbs-ft. Both easily increased with cheap mods. They’re inexpensive to buy used, parts are cheap, easy to maintain and they last forever. Great for towing and fuel economy too....
I’m a big fan of low down torquey gas engines so these little diesels appeal to me a lot more than the current high revving, 2-stroke-ish Tacoma engines. I get where the OP is coming from.......Just sayin....
