To get better fuel economy you're going to have to keep it largely out of boost, and where's the fun in that...boost is why you're installing the thing. Also the higher octane fuel cost will negate it anyway. Anyone using the "potentially better MPG mindset" to persuade them into getting a turbo/supercharger is in for a rude awakening

This my my love/hate fuel economy for my Cummins. Majority of the time, I’m getting 22-24 MPG. But when I get my foot in it, oh boy.

What if you’re already lead foot because you want to have X amount of power on tap, then with turbos that same power level comes on much earlier thus lower cruising RPM?

At least in my mind, this seems to be how one could actually increase MPG. More power on tap = less lead foot to achieve same speed/acceleration. No??

Without having these kits done and a decent sample size, I don't think the data is available yet. As others have noted, the FI will allow the engine to consume more fuel. I suspect your question was more of a "what can I expect to get in normal highway/city driving compared to stock". There is a lot of circumstantial info available online that rotex super chargers and various turbochargers do increased fuel economy.

Because this supercharger is not a roots style does the boost get adjusted by the pulley
only or a waste gate like the turbo?

When going from sea level to 6000 feet Denver or 10,000 feet over the mountain divide depending on original boost you can actually loose 2 or 3 pounds of boost easily on a roots type supercharger.

Do either of these setups, supercharger or twin turbo compensate to spin faster to keep
the original 6 pounds of boost? (I think is the setting) when operating at altitude or will the tune keep the supercharger and turbo at the original rpms and loose boost with altitude?
The higher the altitude you go the supercharger or turbo will have to spin much faster with a different tune if so to keep the original 6 pounds of boost.

If sea level your adding 100 extra hp and there is no compensation for boost, or a different tune, altitude loss hp can be 30-40 hp less depending.

Yes, just change the pulley to raise/lower boost. Only pulley down to what you've been tuned for, but you can go up to lower boost without a re-tune.

    What about for the turbo?
Will it compensate and keep the same 6 pound boost at sea level to the altitude 10,000 feet?
    With the same tune?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the turbos have a waste gate set to 8 psi or whatever he wants to run. The turbos should boost to that 8 psi and the waste gate will open at that pressure and not allow over boost. So the altitude shouldn't really matter because the waste gates are set to open at that specific pressure.

This website explains it in detail and apparently some turbo do not have waste gates but most do.

No, you will have 8psi of pressure over ambient. Pressure is normally regulated by a metal spring that should be consistent no mater the altitude. BUT ambient pressure normally presses on the back side (spring side) of the diafram meaning that boost pressure is relative to the altitude. There may be another wastegate design that I'm not familiar with but as far as I know, this is consistent with all mechanical WGs.

Pikes peak cars generally run larger turbos than would be idea at the start of the race causing additional lag. Using electronic boost controllers, the boost is gradually raised based on the altitude.

That's good info. I know some car manufacturers are using electronically controlled waste gates. My ex had a Chevy sonic that had one. It would actually boost to a pre determined torque given the conditions. It boosted anywhere from 12-18 psi to hit the torque number it was requesting. That car ran just as well at 12k ft as it did in Denver at 5k ft.

I know very little about tuning but I imagine this could be done by trying to burn a specific amount of fuel. I don't think it'll be possible with the Tacoma ecu because of the non-existent I/O to a boost controller.

It appears there are some post controllers that have built in altimeters. This the the first result on Google
