Sound after sitting for a while.

So, my truck has been sitting for about 3 weeks now, and I haven't been able to drive it due to my driving ankle being f'ed up. I decide I would crank it up and drive it around the neighborhood a few minutes just to keep it lubricated.

When I first crank it, I hear this loud knocking sound for probably 5 seconds, then it dies down a little, but I could still hear it. It wasn't the normal "ticking" noise. This sounded like a knocking engine, or an exhaust leak. After driving it around, and stomping it a couple times to "blow out the gunk", I stopped, and couldn't hear the knocking sound anymore. Anybody guess at what it was or is?

 

i've had the same problem for ever. posted up here and no one knows anything. there is a TSB on a fuel line that causes some knocking sounds, but thats on the 2006+ models and i have an 05...

Yeah, everyone comes back with the "toyota tick most likely" and I know the ticking sound, and that was not it. Friend told me probably because the oil settled to the bottom away from the crank and pistons.

 

Sounds like the same problem I have on my LC. This is why I am replacing seals on oil pump. I get the same thing and it is due to oil pump not sealing correctly and oil draining out of it. So when you start engine it runs completely dry until pump primes itself. My solution was to fill up with oil allway to F mark then park with nose down so oil pump is close to oil level.
Try the same thing park with nose down also make sure oil level is correct and see if you get knock again.. if you dont and happens again parking with nose up you need to get that checked.

 

Hmm I'll try this. I do have a very small timing chain cover oil leak, but it's not noticeable on the dipstick. Could that have something to do with it?

 

probably not but it may be showing that there is something wrong there. Oil pump sits inside the cover. Maybe cover is warped or something. Try parking with nose down see what happens.
BTW where is that leak on the top or driver side bottom ?

 

oh i have this weird sound too. Its only when i first start in the morning.... and usually it happens if its been sitting a bit. its like.... 'clunk-dank'

errrr... hard to tell. bottom left is where it looks. But, it might be leaking at the top and just slowly seeping down idk. Fuck I hope nothings wrong. First time I went to get my cover looked at, they quoted me $1450 to repair it. . . FUUUUUCK-UHHH-THAT.

yeah its def a knock. an exhaust leak is more ticking. . . This is the first time I've heard it. It was loud as shit.

 

if the oil seal is leaking, it could be just enough of a draft/vent to let the pump drain itself

 

I believe they wanted $1100 for replacing seals on LC so I spent $40 on seals and $30 on material for tool to hold the pulley, bought torque wrench in Harbor freight for like $60 and I just changed it myself

Well you need to get that fixed otherwise its goign eat your engine at some point. Dont give a gas when it knocks.

Page LU-34 it turns out oil pump is driven by crankshaft and sealed with main seal Best option to cleanup and see where it is leakign from post pics

NP. What oil you have? Sometimes going to higher thickness helps a bit at least to survive until repair. I know job on LC is pita I looked at 2gen FSM and have to say I am not looking forward to that at all but at some point I am pretty sure gonna have to tackle that but that should be sometime in 16 years

 

my taco used to make that sound only at start up on cold days after sitting for a day or two. It then changed to cold days even if it hasnt been sitting. It's warm now (i live in socal) and it still does it. It used to be only for a few seconds at start up. Now it's even after the car is warmed up.... some days the knocking is all day and doesnt go away.

Drives me nuts. I dont think my problem is the oil pump since it does it for a long time... unless i'm not getting any oil through the engine at all... If that were the case i think my engine would have siezed by now? I'm glad you found the reason for yours knocking. It seems as though the knocking is louder near the fuel line under the car and the area where the floor mat goes on the drivers side. thinking about getting an AM fuel pump off URD.
