Do you have the Toyota part number for the new oil filter housing only (w/o cap wrench)? I don't believe I've seen it listed in this thread. Unless I overlooked it....

Hello! Good question. The part number is included directly in the Amazon listing. I’ve confirmed this part definitely fits V6 3rd gen Tacoma’s without any modification.

Another victim of a cracked housing here. Didn't notice until the wife said there were oil spots under my truck in the garage. Oil blew everywhere along the bottom of the truck too. Started up the engine and looked underneath with the skid plate removed. The oil dripped about once every 6-8 seconds. So with today's commute, I lost about 711 drips of oil!

I'd do the Baxter upgrade so I can completely toss the shitty housing design to the wind, but the price is a bit steep. Next stop is the aluminum housing "upgrade," but I question the validity. Everyone getting legit parts from the Amazon vendors? Any recommendations on who to buy from? Basically between Amazon almost promoting knock-offs and China taking over various "hot buys on the market," I have about a 10-15% trust level when it comes to certain things.

You could just take the OEM part number to your local dealer and buy one if you’re scared of Amazon counterfeits.

I have 84,000 miles on my truck. It has had 8 oil changes. I've changed the oil 6 of those times. Still using the original oil filter housing. It's not the design. The housing is actually pretty strong. It's the one holding the wrench that is the problem.

It can't. Maybe a broken housing that lets all the oil run out or somehow the filter was installed improperly impeding oil flow, which is kind of scary who can't put a filter on correctly? At best he's not telling the whole story because whatever the problem is, it isn't a bad housing it was something they did. I would have a hard time believing anything else that "mechanic" ever says from this point forward.

Also demand to see the old housing, I will bet he will say...we didn't save it it's gone.

I'm 11 years and probably 30 oc on my personal toyotas with filter housing plus the hundreds changed when working at a shop, never an issue with them breaking. Use the right tool and not gorilla strength, shouldn't be an problem.

You absolutely right. My wife is far from any mechanical background and she agrees with you 100%. My mechanic did not charge me for the repair or for the part he installed. We all know that it was his fault.

Agree with everything on this thread ...
    1. I've done my own oil for 30+ years - NEVER once had an issue; Toyota/Jeep/GMC/whatever never an oil filter issue.
    2. Exact same issue as stated at the beginning of this thread - let the dealership do the oil changes until the "free" maintenance ran out.
    3. The housing req'd a ton of torque to take off (with the specialty wrench/socket) and crack the tab on the housing in the process. Oil now drips from there.
    4. These housings are garbage and the tech who did the work clearly had WAY over-tighten this resulting in a huge headache on this end.

Ordering a new housing per above. Complete waste of money and time ... that Toyota!

    Still love the truck tho!

The housing being plastic isn't the issue. The issue is the idiots over-torquing them. If the truck came with an aluminum housing, we would have a thread about aluminum housings being stuck/cracked/stripped.

Like every maintenance item, you roll the dice farming the job out to a shop. Even "free" maintenance costs you time and headaches having to take it in, wait, and hope they don't leave you a surprise.

My solution doesn't mess around. Is it for everyone? No... proper install of a stock aluminum cap should have minimal to no issues and a lifetime of servicing... for the imperfect world, though...

Mounted the Baxter remote set-up and I am quite happy with the final result. Best part is that uses my old spin on from my old 97 Tacoma with the V6 (5VZFE)
