Connect to truck, run flash software, click "READ"
If it reads the ecu, then the tune was removed

Stay away from the Dealerships. They will do a reflash update and not tell you. I went through this with my second car 2010 Prius went in for a oil change and they told me it was due for a ECM update. Went from 586 miles full tank to 412 after the update. I now get both my Tacoma and Prius oil changed at Valvoline.

I told them that was the last time they would see me. And that was before I saw that they flashed my ecu, allegedly.

For those with 5.29 gears and a performance tune.

Has there been any weird clunks in high rpm shifts?

Yesterday while passing someone, the shift from 4th to 5th was a very violent bang or clunk in the transmission. I was going roughly 80mph, but due to the 5.29 gearing I was topping out 4th gear.

I am assuming the clunk/bang was due to the hard shift from 4th to 5th at 6500 rpm. In stock form the truck would never see that high of rpm in 4th gear while shifting to 5th.

I tried To search this thread, but may not be using the correct keywords.

I since flashed back to a base tune, I don’t want this to happen again, it must be doing some type of harm to the vehicle.

Ps...I did send a ticket to zen desk, I just want to find out if it’s happening to anyone else.

It probably dropped to 3rd, red lined and then shifted immediately to 4th. Seems to be related to tune and gears as my 4.88 gears sometimes do that on the 91 base tune due to the weird shift logic that Mat has talked about with the ECU and trans. You can minimize it by using sport mode and downshifting when you think it is likely to do this. Guessing the upcoming 4.88 tune will address this.

Usually, dealers give a ton of resistance to re-flashing the ECU. Weird that they would do it. Curious if there is some update out there that is flying under the radar. I could not find anything about a recent ECU update.

wtf? so did they skinny-up the gas pedal ? There was a TSB on the 2nd gen that did take the gas pedal off and shave it to a narrower width, but I have not heard of this on the Gen 3. Take a look and let us know. BTW - I won't let them touch my truck anymore either since the last free service. I do all my own work (oil, diff fluids, tire rotation, air filters, spark plugs, lube,..). I will say for the $ they are fine for tire mount and balance - better and less expensive than big box tire stores. ??? if they flashed your ecu to another coding they should have updated the sticker under the hood with the new ecu version. ?? was your mileage 54877 ?

Yep. That was my 55k service. The last of my free servicings. I literally told them before I left that they would never see me again. It actually felt pretty refreshing.

They used to fight me tooth and nail for a TSB.

gotcha. So the basically the tranny thinks it should be in a different gear, then immediately recognized that it was wrong and tried to quickly correct it?

Does it have anything to do with the higher rpm? I’d rather keep my performance tune if it’s just as likely to do it at the stock redline.

Seems to me (I stand to be corrected) that it is more likely with the stock tune because 105 has a higher redline (assuming redline has anything to do with what you experienced).

There's nothing to "cure". If it was the Toyota tune you could "Read" it. The OVTune cannot be read because it is protected, in order to secure Mat's intellectual property. This exercise simply proved that the OVTune was still installed.

This truck seems to love the mountains... I was getting 21-26 MPG while I was in CO, which I’ve never gotten here in TX and this was while driving over mountain passes. I was running 91 base the whole time. Now that I’m back to SA I’m getting 16.5 again.

How about an altitude adjustment tune, Mat? ;)

Certainly a variable to consider... didn't think it would make that much of a difference, as opposed to air density.
