Age old question of "what do you plan to use it for?"

As far as power supply, things started to get a little more power efficient. 1000w is beast mode, even back then lol

Mine is 860 and is way overkill, i wanna build a new machine soon (except saving money to flee CA instead) and my new machine will probably only get a 750w (or maybe another 860 if i decide to go open loop water cooling).

Anyways, whatcha gunna do with it? Game? Video editing and/or content creation? Casual porn surfing and truck part shopping?

When I built my current rig I was online gaming. First person shooter shit. No longer doing that, but still want a semi capable rig with good graphics. Doing some photography editing. Online bullshit, and accounting. So, probably no need for the super fast box I built last time, which is why I'm considering an off-the-shelf unit.

Yeah, i still game online quite a bit.

In fact, heres me almost killing @essjay when he was learning how to AAR

Disclaimer: i was looking away at something else in my office then noticed the basket moved, meaning the kc130 moved, then realized that i needed to move lol.

So... The old "you can build better for cheaper" still hold true, but that really is worth the time/effort at the higher levels.

I could help you out with PC parts picker, its a new little web app that lets you pick and choose components while doing all the compatibility checks and price matching for you, if you wanted to build one. (AMD has recently released their new shit, which is pretty bang for buck... Although im a die hard intel fanboy).

If you wanted to go the pre-built route, there are tons of places* doing builds now (gaming streamers have brought about a resurgence in PC gaming). Couple of key features that you would look for (SSD hard drives probably being the only real thing i lookout for). As usual, most things will come down to cost/reward. Which, if you dont plan to game again, or do hard core video processing at a professional level, you dont need much.

Feel free to PM me some machines your looking at and ill give you a quick opinion on them. Or maybe at that point ill see your budget and see if i (or my younger, more in-tune budget shopping gamer buds) could find better for cheaper, ect.

Add: if you build, you could always build a future proof tower (cpu/ram/hardrives) and skip a badass video card. Then in a year or two if you decide to play games, or edit more videos, you can get a quality gpu. Video card prices these days are prettt nuts. Double that of a CPU even.

    https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/

Quite a remarkable flight sim, they put alot of work into modeling the aircraft and systems. Several years of devlopement into most of the individual planes (which is why each plane cost as much as a typical AAA video game lol)

It doesnt look "the best", the new microsoft flight sim in the works looks amazing visually. But DCS is the cream of the crop for "combat" flight sims, very costly for new people to get into, considering buying quality control surfaces can easily run you $500+ plus anywhere from $30-80 PER PLANE lol

Add: although, if one were inclined you could download it and fly for free (two free planes), id recommend a $30 Logitech 3d pro flight stick, which is enough for most casual gamers to have plenty of fun.

Well it depends on how much porn you watch Don. lol...just kidding. I would just buy a new PC since they are fairly cheap. Last one I bought was from Costco about 10 years ago and it is still running good. Costco got killer prices.

The chainsaw guy was a neighbor of a friend of mine. They shared the backyard fence. He did it a few times. It's no surprise the tree was completely butchered.

Be aware the graphics card prices have been pretty stupid for the last couple years. Bitcoin miners have driven the prices way up. Other than that everything should be more or less the same as far as putting it together. This site is pretty handy for building: https://pcpartpicker.com/

Cuda GPUs make for VERY fast processors.
I've used them for a few special projects, and they perform much better than any high-end CPU (even enterprise hardware) that I have at my disposal.

I used to mine when it was profitable, not anymore. Re-built my rig this past year and it has been great. Switched over to Ryzen  I'd highly suggest buying a used card that has a transferable warranty to save a few bucks. EVGA is probably the best for that.

    Lets talk Nerds:

I have an older ASUS Sabertooth 990FX MB that currently has the FX5950 chip. I want to completely upgrade the components but keep the motherboard.

Primary use will be Lightroom and some Photoshop. Current set up runs but experiencing lag now when editing in LR.

Suggestions on a budget build? For my intended use, which component should I spend top dollar on?

    CPU? GPU? Ram?

Do you have a budget you're trying to stay within for each component or overall?
