Why didn`t you use the Stainless No Argon or the correct wire ?

Stick welding works great with those random Stainless projects .

309L is great for Carbon to Stainless in wire or electrode

I've wanted to learn how to weld for a long time, so I went and bought a 125 amp harbor freight mig welder and these are my first welds so please forgive how rough they are. Any tips of tricks would be greatly appreciated.

Yep. 70S works just fine to join SS to carbon steel.

I don't think I do enough SS welding to warrent keeping SS wire on hand.

    Welcome, Ethan.

Is your welder the Chicago Electric version?

Those are very hard to learn to weld with. In the plus side, if you can make good welds with one of those units, you will find other wire welders a joy to use.

Welding school never replied to my emails or calls. So I kinda took a break from tig and working on my downhill.

I ended up just sticking with my salt water bucket, and occasional dunks through the day. This is 5 days worth. Pretty happy with it! Plenty rusty for what I wanted.

How thin is that metal? Looks like sheet metal. I'd go to lowes or home depot and get some 1/8" thick bar stock, cut it up, and weld it back together in various joints.

If you wanna be self taught, watch A LOT OF YOUTUBE. There is endless information at your fingertips. Watch, practice, watch some more, practice some more. Keep at it. Took me over a year to get to the point I can lay a nice weld.

You have to learn and understand just what is happening in the weld puddle.

Then make it happen on a constant basis

Learning Long before any videos I am on the fence if one can really learn that way good enough to pass even a simple certification without picking up bad habits .

Ultimately speaking though, why does that matter? I’m all self taught through the Internet. So far my truck hasn’t fallen apart.

The opposite could be argued too, where now you have the internet and access to all this information, good and bad.

Before, you maybe had a couple people that could teach you and who’s to say they weren’t passing along bad habits?

It matters not at all !!

Just the way I feel having had quite a few self taught welders not be able to pass a simple Weld test to further the application process .

Now days it seems being able to pass the Drug test is the major problem

Getting some practice in as I'm getting ready to weld on some sliders. Trying different positions and joint types. Here's some lap joints I was trying while laying on the floor (as if lapping onto my frame). First pic is a weld that I thought was decent, but I felt like I was moving super fast...

    20190731_191000.jpg

Second pic show another where I slowed down a bit, but looks like I went too slow....

    20190731_191150.jpg

Going to try and slow the wire feed rate a bit and see how that works. What say you?

I just finished up this small welding table project this morning. Not much welding in this piece, but a lot of welding will be done on it.

I bought plans from Maker Table for $29, and had everything cut at the shop I work at. The tables are very similar to Certiflat tables.

Wire speed is too high or not enough heat.

    Is this 120 volt welder?

Did you cut it with a plasma or laser? Debating making my own but my dads plasma isn’t good enough to make a clean hole and I’m not sure if I want to drill out every hole lol

Yes/No, it's 120/240. It's a Miller MM 220 and have it hooked up to 240. I was using the auto-set (for 1/8" material) with voltage near max (18.4V) and WFS near min (283). I think that I need to get out of the auto-set feature and play with some custom settings. The auto-set works great for welding in perfect conditions (flat, on bench) but not so much for out of position. Still working on getting shit right. Will probably take some more practice.

I cut this one a laser, and it isn't perfect. I'm going to ream each hole since some have dingle berries that need to be cleaned up.

I'm having 5 tables that are 5x12 cut on a fiber laser. That's the cleanest cut you'll get.

    Sheet and stock.

I'm moving into aluminum welding with spool gun and already have proyects in mind. Just need to find out a way to do clean cuts.
