Heres a straight answer. Your ride will be fine! The only time you'll notice a difference is when off road or going over a speed bump. Easy to live with. I got a Toytec lift for $219 with long/soft AAL in rear. Check out my pics.

You'll never get a straight answer about ride quality.
    WHY??
Each and every person on this forum has a totally different viewpoint of what ROUGH ride means.

    Say for instance:
Truck Owner A - used to own a Cadillac and suddenly buys a tacoma and complains about the ride being too rough.

Truck Onwer B - used to own a 20 year old Ford pickup truck with worn out shocks. He thinks the Tacoma is too damn soft.

So - what you think is rough is actually smooth to someone else.

If you're worried about it that much - then perhaps staying 'stock' is the best thing for you.

    BONE STOCK! lol
Im running King coilovers in the front of my 01 right now and i have to say the ride quality is better than before, less body roll. only thing that got stiffer was the rear over bumps because of my add a leaf. I had a spacer lift (billet spacer) in the front before and i have to say that the ride quality was basically the same as stock.

There is a lot to be said for leaving a truck stock, personally I have always modified my vehicles, (if interested: http://doodlescustomartwork.com/HISTORY.HTM) I just like to have something personalized, and to a certain extent different then everyone else.

Sounds like your TW friends are offering up advice, and I can't resist giving you mine. This Tacoma, my 6th Toyota truck, I wanted a moderate lift while maintaining comfort and usefulness. Did a lot of research, made some mistakes, but finally got it right (IMO):

3" front lift - Fat Bob's Garage strut spacers, $117 comes with differential drop hardware. I actually had ICON coilovers first, but took them off because of the terrible ride and some other quality issues.
1.5" rear lift - added a 4 pack to existing 3 pack leaf springs, not only does this give you a even ride height, but also increases your payload capacity.
Finished it off with 285/75/16 GY Wranglers and 16x8 American Racing ATX Aluminum wheels.

Got carried away (as usual) and installed manual hubs, high angle CV joints and upgraded to an 1-1/4" ADDCO Anti-Sway bar, built a custom hood, etc.
For what it's worth, I don't feel I compromised on the ride at all. It's my daily driver, with a family of four, I can't afford to have an uncomfortable vehicle.
Now my '87 Toyota 4x4, with the Chevy 350, 8 inches of lift, 35's...that was a little stiff...but that was before the family...

[Lucky Sumtyms] I put a Rough Country 3" lift on my 07 4x4 with 285/75-16 tires and the ride is no rougher than it was when it was stock. Except for the mud and snow tires give it that tractor feel :eek:when your 5mph or slower. Once your up to 30mph or faster ;)you can't tell the difference. For a little over a grand I got the lift ($235) wheels ($264) and the tires from pep boys ($405) (buy three get the fourth one free):) and installed the lift in 4 hours. Since then I havn't looked back.:D

    Never give up.

Forgot to mention that the tires are dakota M/Ts. Very agressive. You could maybe go with a less agressive tread than that but i chose to get these because I'm 4wheelin in twentynine palms and the roads are littered with lava rock. Not good for wimpy tires. Your sure to be walkin/miles from nowhere.
