are you saying because the value is lower the event of a total loss increases? So Insurance companies increase the monthly premium to adjust for the chance of that happening.

FYI I personally hate insurance companies.

    no, two separate scenarios.

when there is a total loss, insurance companies will pay out on an “actual cash value” basis (for the most part). this is standard for personal policies. acv means WE value your vehicle and take into consideration depreciation. we then tell you how much we’ll pay out.

so when your vehicle has had previous damage, that can reflect on the acv if it ever became a total loss.

your premium can change due to the vehicle history. any time you have work done on it, and who does the work. generally premiums will change at renewal time.

Ok ok. I was meeting up with a friend tonight to go over a mutual friends bachelor party ideas. He works for a major insurance company and is involved in the litigation dept now. I picked his brain on this topic. He cleared some things up for me. I now understand premiums can increase based off of previous repairs to the vehicle but there’s a lot more to it and it’s very complicated how and when that happens. A little crazy but I can slightly understand it now.

If Toyota damaged the vehicle, and they covered the repairs, and nothing went through insurance, why would insurance go up?

Oh man this thread is gold.

Absolutely correct. My summer job after my first year of college was for a party rental company, delivering and setting up tents, tables, chairs etc.

About 1/2 way thru the summer I was charged with starting to drive the trucks on the merit of "not a mouth breathing moron". A few days into this I backed into one of the rental trucks, cracking the fiberglass fender and breaking a marker light. The owner/ boss predicably flipped a shit, saying I'm going to have to pay for it blah blah blah.

So I went home and did some research, found that he had no ground to stand on. Next day I went in said "I'm not paying a dime, you're the one who asked a 19 y/o to drive a 26' box truck for $8/hr. I'm sorry it happened and go ahead and fire me if you want, but if you withhold any pay I'll see you in court."

Ended up working there every summer during college, and for a few years after lol. Never paid a cent for the damage and turned out to be a pretty decent straight truck driver too.

THIS MAKES ME NAUSEOUS that management drives businesses into this sort of DECEPTION...fool me once shame on you, YOU FOOL.
My preacher just bought a used truck that the engine didn't last 1 month. 1-month! and now will not pass a pressure test, he didn't get it checked out and got fooled. And no one on either side (the sales lot or his lawyer) can/will do anything about it,,, he's stuck with a worthless truck that'll cost more to repair than it's worth. I just don't want to be the soul who cheats a preacher ya know.

Yes and it’s a shame that individuals and businesses with a propensity for greed and corruption drive these actions day in and day out
    everywhere. Caveat Emptor!
