Why didnt you just wait for the person to come out and get their insurance information and handle it in person? Probably see my poor 89 y/o grandma later with a f***ing shopping cart on her car door.

My point is, you never know who the other driver is or how crappy their day has been or what their circumstances are, we're all people. Imo, OP should have exchanged insurance, said "hey accidents happen", got it fixed, and the world would go on. As opposed to someone coming out to their car to see a shopping cart zip tied to it, possibly not even knowing why.

 

Ive made mistakes. I am also aware of when I hit another persons car with mine and find a way to let them know and own up to it.

 

My fix would have been to smashed against the other cars bumper to put that back in place.

Knowing my sweet grandma, she would have just driven home with the thing still ziptied to the door, then had my grandpa cut it off for her. Then there would have been a squabble over why the door is knackered and needs PDR and repaint.
