Those of you that did your own spindle gussets, did you just weld like normal? Or preheat them and then cool them slowly somehow??

Not too much science for mine. Heated with MAP torch but not tooo hot. Tacked lots of places top to bottom, small welds spreading the love around as I went. Didnt wrap mine after, just air cooled. Seem to working fine for me, at least as a good Yard ornament

 

I did exactly what Everett did. Made sure it was hot outside too so there wasnt a drastic hot to cold change. If you welded them now during the day you could probably just set them out in the sun and let them slowly cool the rest of the day like that but probably the best way to cool them is in sand. Get a 5 gallon bucket, put the freshly welded spindles in and fill the bucket with sand.

 

Dont forget to drink a beers

 

Maybe put some sand in the bottom of the bucket first so the spindles don't melt through.

 

Heat will def penetrate an unprepared bucket

 

But, with enough beers, you really won’t care.
