So I work at a grocery store and the local union and ONE person at the store (not even a manager, just the person who handles paperwork) have been pressuring me to join their stupid union and keep saying I'll fired if I don't pay my union dues...

I've tried researching but it really isn't clear as to what the actual rules are about the union...

I also emailed somebody in the union and they made me not want to join the union even more with her demeaning hissy attitude. I have no need or desire to join...I barely make enough money as it is and I don't want to give up more money for something that I don't want or need to be a part of.

Anyways, can I really be fired for not joining the union? I know there are others who work with me who haven't joined the union and have been working for 3+ years. I kind of feel like I'm being targeted? I don't know...

No, you cannot be fired for not joining the Union. They're just yanking your chain to make you join.
If you keep being threatened, talk to upper management.
If they do fire you, contact a lawyer.....and sue them.

There was a time for Unions, back in the early 1900's, but not so much now. The Unions are more about political causes and less about the worker.

I did a little research and it sucks but it looks like they could fire you for not joining. Not too sure about this though. I found something call Right-To-Work laws, which California does not have, says that you can't be forced to join a union.
    http://research.lawyers.com/California/Employment-Law-in-California.html
This website might have a little information on the matter. Hopefully they don't fire you. I wouldn't think they could fire someone for not joining something.

Yeah, I read about the right-to-work laws and how California doesn't have them...sucks.

I just don't agree with unions......but I contacted my manager and she said unfortunately I do have to join or I will be fired. She wasn't just saying that either because she's a manager, I sent her a message on FaceBook so it's official.

Oh well.....I guess I'll join so I have a job while I look for another one....

I just think it's unfair to force employees, especially part timers, into joining the union...

If your going to join make sure you read anything you sign at least 2 times. Don't let them pressure you into signing too quickly. I would also try to find a way out of it since you really don't want to join. Don't give your money to something you don't want.

That's pretty bogus...Totally take your time and be careful with signing on "for now"...There may be hooks that make it harder to get out after the fact that to just quit now.

I wouldn't join, even if it is apart of your "contract". Being a part time worker you do not have a lot of money, and it may be one of those things that you join for life. I promise you, being fired now will beat being stuck into union bullying the rest of your life.

Screw them....that kind of crap pisses me off.

Well, I guess I'll apoligize for giving the wrong information. I wasn't aware that they could fire you. Still doesn't sound right to me, but whatever.

I guess this is what to expect for living in such a liberal state. We aren't so free anymore.

In the job I have, your either going to pay union dues or a work fee. Go figure its a state job, so I might as well be in the useless union.

Well I absolutely have to, otherwise I'll be out of a job. I'd rather pay fees than be out of a job completely...

I will definitely make sure it's not a life thing either. I'm moving out of state next summer anyways so hopefully that won't be an issue.

If I had the time, I would.

It's all good. Another reason why I hate this state...

    Ouch.

Not necessarily. In the mid 1980's, I worked part-time at Northwest Airlines. I was also a C scale employee, but I still paid the same amount of union dues as a full time A scale employee.

That kind of shit is why Unions are no longer respected. They have turned into thugs. The long ago stopped acting in the best interests of the dues paying employees and now work in the best interest of the union. They throw people under the bus all the time. I was a Teamster in college and I never got shit for all of the dues money I paid. We were without a contract for 1 year and I still never got a retroative raise that was promised. They strong arm governments and large corps. but none of the extortion money ever seems to trickle down to the rank and file.

Well I don't want to join at all because of exactly what you just said, I've just been told by manager that I have to or I will be fired... :(

Like it's something I want to fight, I just don't have time and I don't know if it would even be worth it...
