OK, thanks. I'm just watching @Timmah!'s video (which I'll have to finish later) and it looks like I'll need a bunch of SSTs for the job. Dang.

I'm sort of thinking the root of the problem must be the breather to have them both go in the same 24hr period. Planning to check it tomorrow. Sucky thing is that I'd just gotten all the parts to relocate it off of the diff, and hadn't installed them yet.

 

Seals and bearings yes for new parts and brakes. Should be fine with reusing everything else.

2.75" tubing works well to slip over the axle. Then need tabs to bolt the backing plate too.

Few feet of 2" tubing works great as the hammer to bang the seal retainers on.

Don't need a lot of SST. Just the press and the device to hold the backing plate which can be made. Brett made in that wasn't bad. My dad made one when we did Grant truck and it was a bit smaller but overkill and heavy.

 

I'm guessing @drr has already built a fixture and used his press to do his own. Maybe he can add to this discussion.

 

Yes this is true, wouldn’t take the Tacoma without sliders, wouldn’t take the 4 runner at all without a significant lift and sliders. Just a bunch of places to dent quarter panels and lots of 2’ dropoffs. In my limited observations the side by side goes a little over twice as fast as a built Tacoma in a lot of the terrain around here. Not better or worse, just faster.

I love passing utvers on trails it happens more than you'd think. More driver dependent than tool.


I'm going to goose early next week. I'd love to come down there as I have parts to grab from Brett. But my weekends are sunday-tuesday right now..

 

I would like too, but I don't have an off road ready truck ATM. Started dismantling mine back into a work truck. Not sure at this point when I will get the DC going, too much other stuff going on it seems. I could join in a passenger seat I suppose for a day

 

Welcome to ride in my general, I know it’s lame...it’s not a Toyota, but man had it in three feet of water today for 100yd plus stretches and it just hums along. The things part boat

 

I made the SST, but ended up not using it. It's kind of a poor design, you're basically pulling on the axle flange studs to push the retainers and bearing off - not exactly what they're intended to do. I ended up just using two pieces of square barstock under the backing plate, it popped off easy. The 50T electric press may have had something to do with it.

I believe I still have at least the threaded flange plate if you want to have a go with the SST though, Dan. That press down at Mike's house should be big enough to do the job.

 

Finally made it to moon lake today, rough going in from the north side. @Blackdawg is this where you camped for the eclipse?

 

no I don't think so. Up by Union pass but nowhere special. Tons of people out there so just a random spot.

but yeah. Gets hot, that is pretty damn hot though. Sensor reads fluid coming out of the tranny. The key is to use 4lo if your in the dirt all the time unless its relatively flat/sloping hills.

 

yeah sliders...build out the rear..throw a roof rack on it for the tent..new rear coils looks like are needed. Rear links, new panhard.

Panhard is needed to be longer if lifted. It helps with the ass wiggle. Which yours looks way higher than 1.5'' because grants is on that with OME881s up front and 890s in the rear. Yours is much taller.

We are doing new links next week. doing the Rokmon ones or whatever. Poly bushings on the stock uppers and panhard.

Ran over a lag screw and speared the fucker. Pulled it and shoved some plugs in hoping it would seal... It didn't. So now I'm hustling to get some tires before I move cause I don't wanna tow on these
