Painting fiberglass fenders???

Okay, so I'm pretty sure by next week I will have some pre-ownd Glassworks Front Fiberglass fenders for my 08 Tacoma Prerunner. I'm trying to think ahead and decide what I want to do about paint matching. My truck is silver and I want these fenders to have a quality paint job that matches the rest of the truck. What do you guys think?

I wouldn't mind doing it myself if someone knows where I can order exact match paint. I own an automotive touch up gun that might come in handy. Just wanted to get some opinons. Thanks

 

color match is the only way to go...if you ask me...

you can always take it to toyota and have them paint/clear them...or any paint shop around your area should be able to match the color exactly...just give them your paint code which is on your driver side door label...you should also think about getting the fiberglass bumper caps...when i was at SEMA show this past year I saw a DC BSP with the front set flares and bumper caps: bumper caps were molded to stock bumper and made it look factory...when I got the extra $$$ that's what I plan on doing to my truck...

I want to modify the rear glasswork fenders that way I can still use my tonneau cover...

 

Right, that sounds like the best quality option. So you don't think it's worth trying it myself? I wonder how much a shop will charge. I'll probably just have to call around.

I do think the bumper caps will be my way to go. My girl hates pre runner bumpers and I don't have the money for it so ... oh well.

 

you could try it yourself and if its not up to your standards you could always pay toyota or a shop to do it...

the cap would be the hardest part to mold to the bumper since you would need to use fiberglass...but I like working with fiberglass been doing it since high school...just take your time and build up the fiberglass layers equally that way its easier to sand down and make flush with the body lines...

 

autozone silver son, i used color match spray and it faded after two months, the autozone silver is good after 8 months. if your anal about it have it done by a shop but i don't care since bushes and shit mess them up anyways.

 

Let me ask you this. How close is Autozone silver to Toyota silver? Was it damn close or noticeably off? Also what about clear coating?

 

got my fronts and caps painted for 800$ at a local shop here. i shopped around alot of shops quoted 1k.

 

Are you serious? That seems rediculously steep. I haven't called around yet so I wouldn't know, but dam. I'll call around tomorrow and see what shops are wanting.

 

Mine are rattle canned because they get messed up by bushes and rocks and sand. or if you crack one like I did when you repair it you have to repaint it.

 

It really close, it was closer than the color matched cans I bought. The sutozone stuff is called radiant silver in a blue and white can from what I remember, it has some metal flake like the oem paint. Try a couple small coats and see how you like it.

Great, I will go to autozone and look for this color. Did you clear coat yours after? I think that's the only thing that might set it apart from the oem paint. That deep gloss look.

 

Line-x? Is that like bed liner/ undercoat stuff or what?

 

Not thread jack, but rzimm001 how much did your suspension cost total? I want the same set up. How do u like it?

 

another thing especially with fiberglass fender you need to add structural bracing so that they don't flex as much when you romp it hard on trails...they aren't hard to make and pretty cheap if you need them fabricated...

line-x-ing the underside of the fenders is a really good idea...never thought about doing that myself...

 

i did not clear coat because i would have to sand the fenders for repaint, if i scratch them i just paint without sanding. The lazy part of me.

 

I love it. The rear now has a cage and bigger shocks, but the setup I ran before that, listed in my signature was great. I bought it all used so I saved a quite a bit. I recommend all the Icon products as they have given me excellent customer service. My favorite components were the front coilovers and the rear add a leafs. I would estimate in suspension I spend about a grand on that setup. Brand new expect to spend about $1700.

 

Right. I think I will look into clearcoating them since I don't intend on trashing them too soon. Key word is always "intend". I'm sure I'll eat my words. Thanks again for the advice!
