Hi.. This is my first post even though I've been a member since 2015. I always refer to TW for answers. :)

    Here's my question...
I have a 2007 Tacoma V6 Prerunner that's overheating. The radiator reservoir is completely empty by the time I get to my destination. I can see that the water is splashing while I'm driving but can't find the leak. I have a new engine, we replaced radiator, thermostat, radiator cap, water pump and it still overheats after driving it about 25 miles with little slow and go. I've also done a cooling system pressure test and compression test and all is good.
What could this be?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Definitely sounds like you're just leaking it. Can't find anything leaking in the garage or anything like that? Have you also checked the oil for coolant / tested the coolant for exhaust? Worst case it's head gaskets if they didn't install the heads properly with a new motor.

@BalutTaco... Thank you! AZ is pretty brutal in the summer. I've had the truck since 2007 and its never done this. Frustrating..

    Likely a headgasket.

Try running it hot, parking it and inspecting cylinders for coolant accumulation.

    “I have a new engine.”

    Why?

    Is it used?

    Rebuilt?

    Is it warrantied?

Clean up the engine and top off the fluid start it up and let it idol if it's leaking externally you should be able to find it pretty easily. Keep an eye on the temperature don't let it get to hot or it will take out your head gaskets if there not already shot. Make sure it's not getting into the oil if it is it will look milky white and it's definitely your head gaskets.

I am also not a mechanic but do you need to "burp" the system when filling? Maybe that could be the issue?

Thanks! Don't see anything on the ground. No milky liquids and no smoke out of the tailpipe. The new engine has been running strong since January or so when i got it done. I even used a dye test and we cant seem to detect a leak. Could it be a bad thermostat or water pump?

@whatstcp Thank you! We will try burping it tonight. It starts overheating when I'm stopped.

@dofartshavelumps thank you! We will try that tonight.

FYI, the Lisle 'spill free funnel' is awesome for getting air pockets out of bitchy engines. It's a bigass funnel with adapters to go onto the radiator, you fill it 3/4 full and just let the engine get warm, and give the upper hose a few squeezes to make sure. I'd think any mechanic capable of doing an engine would also know to get any air pockets out (and that that would have reared its head before now) but there I go assuming things... I've seen some real rocket surgeons work on cars for a living.

Only doing it standing still or moving slow makes me point towards a fan issue, namely the clutch. If it's getting enough air to stay cool at speed, it's shedding a lot more heat then than it is at idle, so in theory the liquid half of the cooling system is doing its job...

At this point, i think we've done most of the troubleshooting we can. Couple more that were suggested and I'm calling engine guy. Thank you!

My husband and I are doing the work ourselves. The engine guy only does engines and wouldn't be williing to help even a little. Could I also burp the system by running water in it until there are no more bubbles, if I couldn't find a spill free funnel?

Its a stock dash gauge. It gets up to about 3/4 up the temp gauge.
We did check the fan.. Runs good.
