So I went camping with my neighbor this weekend and I noticed how organized he had his stuff. I also noticed that he had some things that would make my camping life much easier.

My question to you TW is....

What camping items, (even if its as small a little chef knife set)
Do you have that you cant live with out
    Do you wish you had
Do you want to get rid of because its a hassle or taking up too much space?

This is the start of me overhauling my camping set up, so ideas PLEASE :fingerscrossed::cheers: Thanks in advance!

I’m trying to be realistic here. I know I have dreamt of stuff like that before but not really what I was meaning with this post. Thanks though

Okay, how about cast iron cooking equipment, a skillet and Dutch oven.

Thanks for the post.. I have a shovel and ax and hatchet and chain saw. Depending on the type of camping I’m doing I will take different items with me.

Well if you don’t mind weight, cast iron is always great. But if you want to camp box light weight and small. I’d check sights like ReI and MSR. They carry great stuff that packs together so minimal space is needed.

It depends on what kind of camping, how many people, and what you've got to carry it in.

For myself - a small pan, a titanium spork, a pocket knife, a single burner stove and I'm pretty much good. More people means bigger pots and more burners.

As a general rule I aim for multi purpose items. Those toasters that go on the stove, for example, are idiotic unless you really love toast.

It's nice to have all your items run on the same fuel, white gas is my favorite.

Like someone said earlier, a Dutch oven, with the raised lips on the lid so you can put charcoal on it. Master it and you will be a camp cooking god.

A hatchet is great for driving tent stakes and making kindling.

A tarp for under the tent is essential. Another for the picnic table is nice too.

    Quality folding chairs.

    A deck of cards.

If I'm group camping, a 6qt stainless pot. Makes feeding a group a breeze and is great for cleaning dishes. I love it so much I backpacked it in mckittrick canyon.

Along the same lines, a teapot. You always need hot water for something .

I guess I should have stated I have lots of things... That’s part of the problem... I wanna get to a point that when its just me or just me and the wife and maybe the teenage daughter that I don't have to lug around a bunch of different things.

I have a camp chef two burner stove that I love.
I have two different tents one big and one small.
I have air mattresses that are needing replaced.
I have a box full of kitchen shit that i need to replace with just a couple items that can hold the wife and I over or teen daughter if she goes with like cups, plates, silverware, knives, cutting board, coffee mugs, propane coffee maker, and cast iron pans.
I have battery and propane lanterns
    I have a 10’ x 10’ pop up canopy
Like I said before I have an ax, hatchet, and chainsaw
I have cards and tables and a citronella candle and aluminum kitchen set up thing... and that’s not even all of it......

I just wanna get to a point where I’m organized with the minimum amount of stuff to get me thru a 3-4 day camp out and then if I feel like I wanna add to it I can.

I would try using the kitchen utensils at home and see which ones you can drop. I would also look and see what things, like the propane coffee maker, you can replace with stovetop items.

I have no real love for air mattresses. They're delicate and the world is full of sharp objects. I have a thermarest self inflating that I've nursed along for almost a decade. I want to go to a cot though - if I can find a quality one.

Once you figure out what you want, organize it into an action packer or similar box with a latching lid, then label them with a paint pen.

Both the guys I went with this weekend had cots... I’m thinking about it but i dont know yet. Ill have to look into the self inflating pads.

As far as utensils go right now I still have a bunch of plastic ones that I’m trying to go thru and then after that who knows... I also have a big chefs knife and 4 metal steak knives I got from dollar store. I wouldn’t mind looking for a stove top coffee maker but this Coleman propane one is easy if I can get over lugging it around. Thanks for your reply

This is one of the cots the guys had this weekend. Aluminum tubing very light weight probably could be strapped to your back for a multi day hike? Seemed cool and was very sturdy

I try to pack light myself. all my gear fits in a 55L duffel i can throw in the bed of the truck or strap to the back of the motorcycle. have a msr cookset that nests the bowls inside the pot with fuel and burner. dehydrated meals are fine but prefer canned stews and chilis, oatmeal in the morning. Drink everything out of the same spill proof coffee cup I take to work and have had forever. down sleeping bags pack small and with a small sleeping pad have always stayed comfortable. Takes me longer to get that stupid pad rolled up and back in its bag than it does to take down the tent though. Have a couple small chairs that break down to the size of my forearm that are real handy. If i'm in the truck I'll bring a spade shovel a chopping axe and sometimes the cooler. Kids and GF just bring a small duffel or backpack apiece and were off.

I've had to start over with camping gear. It got to the point where I was spending more time packing stuff and setting up than I was enjoying myself so decided to minimize as much as possible and won't go back.

As for the air mattress that needs replacing...Look at the Klymits, they are very comfortable. I have the DLux? the wider one.
