For anyone out there with an oem tonneau that they installed themselves, this question is for you. I just bought an oem tonneau off CL from a 2017 platinum to put on my 2016 sr5. The problem is the fasteners for attaching the mount points to my bed frame will not seat. It seems like the thread on the fasteners is too course or fine for the holes they are supposed to go into. I got one mount installed but had to use an impact driver to do it and it was not pretty. The second mount I tried to install left me with a fastener that had all of the threading ripped off. I’m a little confused as to how this is happening because this is all oem stuff I’m using. The fastener holes are a little rusted and so are the fasteners but that doesn’t explain it. Have any of you guys heard of something like this happening ?

Platinum? Tacoma never came in a Platinum. Tundra does.

Here’s the stripped fastener, a Normal fastener, and the holes they should mount in. The fasteners barely fit in the hole and either don’t seat properly or only go in about a 1/4 of a turn. I managed to use an impact driver to install one set but they went in so hard that I know something is wrong

Yeah this came off of a Tacoma and is going on another Tacoma. Not trying to get a big tonneau cover on a small truck.

Run a tap in and chase threads first. Threads are full of paint, and/or rust.

This sounds like it might do the trick. Is there any way to find the right tap? I don’t know if the fastener has a standard thread profile or how I would figure out what it would be if it did.

You need a thread gauge. Hardware store, or auto parts store (Napa) should have one.

I'm having the same issue. The screws won't go all the way in what does it mean to tap in and chase the threads
