Starting problems

What mods, if any, have you done, including led lights? LED's are known to mess with the trucks electronics. There is another thread here where the LED caused intermittent problems with the FOB unlocking the doors and never threw a code.

 

Considering it a RWD vehicle, this would make sense.

 

"Raptor" LED lights using the supplied add-a-fuse. Added to the headlamps fuse. Installed about 10 months ago.

All of my bulbs are stock (headlamps, taillights, license plate, interior, etc.).

 

These new cars and their new fangled electronics. Back in my day.......

 

Exactly! This isn't something I could fix or diagnose in Walmart parking lot. There were no codes thrown either. My best guess was a bad battery or a faulty push-to-start button.

 

Last week mine starting acting funny on start up. Randomly it will start without even turning over it sounds like. Most of the time it fires up normal but like 2 out of 10 times it goes almost instantly. Any ideas on what my random drama might be?

 

most likely: check/change fob battery
other possibilities:

bad brake switch - no signal to ECU to fire starter relay, does it go into acc/run modes, but no crank?

weak fob signal (damaged fob-need new fob (try the other one first, you got 2...)). hold fob close to start button if it happens again.. this will indicate a bad/weak battery, and or signal in the FOB.


FOB is proximity based low power usage.. if you keep it in your pocket, and keep hitting buttons while at work and such it will drain much faster... should typically last 6 months or so..

Sounds like what was happening to my truck. It’s either your battery or starter... starter for me

 

I just rolled over 22k miles. Makes me nervous/pissed that I am already having drama this early. Would this be covered under warranty?

 

That engine is definitely turning over, it's not starting. Not turning over means that the starter isn't spinning the engine.

 

Did you get it taken care of?

Most people on here complain about this and that about their truck, and "i'm so mad right now!!!! Damn Toyota better...ARRRRGHHH I'm so mad!!!" but then we never hear back from them and what the problem was.

 

Update #3: Elaborating on specific dialogue between me and the dealer that I left out from my previous post.....

I hadn't heard anything from the dealer, so I called them on Friday. They asked me if I had "messed with the wiring under my steering column". I told them I hadn't, as my truck is completely stock. They said "it looks like someone messed with the wiring harness, which caused the rear brake control module to fail or not receive a signal". I told them that it sounded like they were trying to blame me for an electrical problem and they just said "well, we're going to have to work backwards and take a look at the whole rear brake circuit to see where the problem is. We'll call you in a few hours".

They called me a few hours later saying the truck is fixed. I asked them what they actually fixed, and the dealer asked me if I had "messed with the fuse box". I laughed and told them I checked a few fuses and the battery AFTER the truck wouldn't start. I told them I checked a few fuses that seemed related to ignition/starting/rear brakes. I told them all of the fuses looked fine to me. The dealer told me "well, your rear brake fuse was missing... So we replaced it and that fixed the problem". I laughed and asked if they replaced a bad fuse or if he was literally trying to tell me that the fuse wasn't there. He repeated "the fuse was missing, so we added a fuse and now it works". Fine. I'll play your game and come pick my truck up.

When I picked the truck up, I asked them to show me which fuse was "missing". They referred to the paperwork and said it was the "rear brake fuse" and that the technician who worked on my truck wasn't there, so they wouldn't be able to physically show me which fuse was replaced. I looked at the fuse box myself and it looks identical to how I left it. Really wish I would have taken a picture of the fuse box to compare.

The truck starts fine and is driving fine now. The tow and and diagnostics (and even the "fuse") were covered under warranty/Toyota Care. I don't know why lying to me or trying to put the blame on me would benefit them, when it was all covered under the warranty. I don't know why it took them 2 days to come up with "a fuse was missing".

Yup. This dealership is 20 miles away from me. The next closest is 50 miles away.

Again, not really sure why lying about it would be advantageous to them. But at the same time, it's absurd to claim that the fuse was physically missing. And the comment about the wiring under the steering column being "messed with", when that didn't end up being a problem after all. The wiring looks neat, tidy and factory to me.

Did another service technician pull the fuse and forget to put it back in? Did they find something neglected from the factory that they fixed? Were they trying to get me to admit to something so it wouldn't be covered under warranty?

I'm glad it's fixed, but I have more questions than answers.

 

Glad it worked out for you, and that it was simple "Missing fuse" lol just write a yelp review saying it took them 2 days to add a missing fuse, play by their game. Wouldn't the cars computer send a code in regards to a missing fuse on the OBD-2?

 

6 months?! My truck is a 2016 and I've had 3 years of daily driving mine and the FOB works just fine.

 

LEMON LAW?
