Yeah I’ve got one of those jobs too...I can dream of a day where I can work remote 100% of the time
Jah feel, Someday I’d like to get a van, the idea just seems convenient for weekend trips or vacations. I’ve been trying to convince my friend to pickup an old school bus though...it would be fun to just help him build it.

Are you going to build out the interior?

I've got that job. I can work anywhere I can get a cellular signal and have my laptop. But I've also got an 8yr old so my dirtbag in a van with my traildog dream is dead.

I've long thought about building one out for shorter "long weekend" camping trips with him which could eventually turn into long weekend riding trips with him, but what stops me is the price. I can't see a way to do a decent one for under 20k and just like my bass boat dreams I can't justify dropping that kind of cash for something that would only get used maybe 12x a year

Yeah the cost is definitely high. You might be able to find a van cheaper but then you have reliability and comfort issues.

Part of the reason I have almost convinced my friend to get an old school bus. Big and cheap.

@113tac yeah thats the plan, but taking it slowly and spending some weekends in it to see what I will really end up needing. Pretty sweet using it as just a shell for now but gets pretty disorganized. Hammock sleeping at the new river gorge this weekend after a triathlon

Nice! That’s probably the way to do it. I’m sure it could get out of hand quickly

Not a van, but I purposely built my truck with the "bike trip 3 day weekend to a week" mindset:

I hear you. Though my Tallboy and my wife’s Ripley have held up well for over four years of frequent riding. I think the Ripley, Hightower, and most Stumpies are all pretty dialed for Bay Area trails, at least based on what I see here. I think it shouldn’t be hard to find a used V3 Ripley, since the new one and Ripmo are probably driving a lot of owners to upgrade. V2 Ripley is fine, but I think V3 gets you Boost and better cable routing which is a PIA on older Ibis. But go demo the bikes at the factories; it’s a good deal and you get good setup. Plus proceeds go to our local trails. And when you find your bike, join Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz mbosc.org to keep more trails coming.

In the hunt for Softopper over the rail mounts to maybe pair with a Rockymounts Brassknuckle or Tomahawk rooftop style mount. Not keen on always having to remove the front tire.

This one is @90yota ’s, Mike was cool enough to get me a few detailed pics in order to maybe have one fabbed up.

This is the response I got from Softopper today. So if anyone out there has one, let me know.

KBvoodoo made some as well, might be able to find a used set.

If I go softtopper, itll be a Wandelust rack, and I will mod it to mount a 1up, or Yakima HighRoad on each side.
Fiberglass, thinking of adding some FRO racks, and getting creative.....

    Just my 2 pennies....

    @Gunshot-6A
Wish I had the time to dedicate to ANYTHING, let alone biking or MC trips..
    A little bit of envy...

Diggin the idea, I’ve seen those Wanderlust rack systems, I’ll have to take a look at the 1up mounts.

Seen those KBvoodoo ones as well, no luck yet but still trying to track some down as well to see about dimensions to get some made.

Ah gotcha. Googling things wanderlust bike related resulted in a ton of Salsa overfender type racks. I do like that design for the softopper. Leitner-esque

Still not sure I follow on the FRO tracks. I think I get what you're saying conceptually. Just haven't seen any turnkey solutions. Only DIY setups.
