The first time I saw it, that Fumoto looked so cool and easy! just find an old gallon jug and rotate it for changes...WOW...no more pouring from the drain pan into the jug and cleaning up the inevitable mess!

But...I have recurring nightmares about someone twisting it open in the parking lot at the mall. Crazy, I know...but...well...crazier things happen all the time.

I've never had problems with THAT part. Maybe 'cause I'm not stingy with it so it's a tight fit as the threads cut through it and pretty careful to torque it good and tight (but still NEVER as tight as the gorillas at the shops do it). I also keep the crush washer anyway; but don't worry about changing it, cracked or not, since that's what the tape is for.

I've heard some people are concerned about little strings of it cutting off by the threads and coming loose in the oil. That's worth worrying about I suppose: just make sure to keep it several threads back from the tip of the bolt and clean off the old before putting on new.

does anyone else have a problem with the oil launching over the sides of the drip pan when you pull the drain plug? i've had it happen to me twice. this last time it shot all the way to the tire

Hell yes. I would say that 60% of all the oil ended up OUTSIDE the drip pan. It absolutely sucked.

    Yes.

I'm gonna get me one of those giant drain pans with the lip curled inward. The one I saw also has a pour spout to pour the used oil into the jug for drop off.

OK, so just how do you get to the drain on the oil filter reservoir? So much "stuff" around it I can't get my fingers on it. Can't come from the bottom either due to the skid plate and all the other connectors and braces in the way.

Hey all, I'm new to the Tacoma family and did my first oil change yesterday. This sticky made it very easy and by far the easiest oil change I have ever done. I used to own a 2003 WRX and it was a PITA to change with how it was set up underneath. This was nice and easy and I love how the oil filter is up top and easy to get to.

I'm sure I'll have more questions about the Tacoma but I'll be sure to post them in the appropriate threads.

    Thanks for the sticky!!!!

I must say I have a hard time seeing the oil on the dipstick as well after an oil change, I just make sure to add what is specified and I can usually find the oil a little below the top mark.

You can scuff up the end of the dip stick with some coarse gritt sand paper to make it easier to see.

    You should be fine.

I've got a 2010 OR and did a search but didn't seem to find an answer.

Does anyone know what type of oil is put in by the factory - is it regular or semi-synth? I assume it's not full synthetic because of the cost.

    Regular oil was in mine.

I normally get the dealer to do my oil changes, and thought I do it myself. I am by no means and expert, but not a novice either. I have to say, Chris 4X4 step by step was great. As like most of you, I had my share of oil mess too. Also, the idea to use the 5/16" 5ft tube was a huge blessing. GREAT IDEA. I did have one issue and I have to say I was not a very happy camper at the time. Getting the old oil filter off. The dealers had that one so tight, I almost broke my oil filter wrench. Dealer put it on way to tight. I took my time and it took me a little over an hour. I worked out a great system and I am sure it can be done 20 to 30 mins tops. So thanks to you all for your help!!!!!

    :yay:

Great write up, lots of great info!

I'm planning on do my 1st old change the next time it's up...I only had 2 free ones from the dealership.

BTW, where's a good site to order some OEM oil filters?

    Thanks.

Getting ready to do 1st oil change, will be using Mobil 1 Oil and filter -

Questions: The 5/16 tubing, is that ID or OD measurement ?

I have 2500 mi. on truck, 1 yr. old, can I go ahead and reset the "maintenance reminder" and expect it to reset itself for another 5000 +/- miles ? I will be changing oil and filter at 5000 mi. intervals after this 1st change -

Also, what do you think about using a product such as Lucas gas treatment ? I have used this product about once a year in previous trucks ?

    Thanks guys
