So I have heard. I'm joining my dad and his buddies this year. They've been to that area the past 2 years and have only heard a a couple of bulls and haven't been able to let an arrow fly. We spoke with the land manager in that area and they seem to think heavy pressure from wolves is keeping them quiet. Any tips on hunting Elk in these conditions?

how far are you going in? Elk are going to need water, if you know where theres some good creeks or water holes that would be good spot to look for...but best bet would be to get up on the the ridges and scope and do some calls. early morning and late evening is best but if you get a mature bull they will bugle in the middle of the day. I had one couple seasons back come up hill towards me (got to about 50-60yds I think). If you hear them they can be up to a mile away, if they are close you will know it, they are loud! ....I also always try to make a "immature" bugle call. That will get the herd bull fired up. Usually thats just a long whistle call. If he cuts you off you know hes getting fired up! You dont want to bugle too much as it will run off the smaller bulls, a good cow call also helps. One bugle and couple cow calls would be ideal...biggest thing is to watch the wind! Whitetail run couple hundred yards...elk will run couple miles...LOL watch out for grizzlies! hope this helps some.

I recommend this bugle...works great! easy to use, can do different calls, whistle, bugle, grunts etc...

I use the white the most, make sure you have 2-3 packs of these, they stretch out in the sun.

Yes, thanks for the info. We will be hunting out of our packs for 10 days, so we will be pretty far back in the wilderness. We are beginning on the western side of the north fork of the St. Joe. We have a few drinking spots and meadows marked on gps and we just have to hope that wolves haven't pushed them out by the time we get there.

Well I went to my local Excalibur dealer ( half hour ride ) he has a new Micro Banshee 308 25” across the limbs ,200# draw weight . Shot it ,it’s nice and it’s not much different than the AXE 340. It is $50 more than than AXE but probably a hair easier to cock . Decisions,Decisions :annoyed:Both in the new Kryptek camo pattern !

they do come back to the same areas, they just may get pushed but the will always need water so this year has been dry again so they will be sticking near a water source, however small it is. if you get winded best thing to do is to leave, they will come back. Seems like around me they go uphill in the evenings, downhill in the mornings towards water. Good luck!

oh one last thing...if you spot a lone cow...make sure you scan the area where you are going as far left and far right. Last year I kept my eye on the lone cow in hopes of seeing a bull, I did see a bull but it was too late--had I looked to my left where i was walking (cow was to the far right 400yds away) I would have got a nice bull. he was 36yds as he was bounding off away from me...76yds when he stopped:oops::rofl:probably was 30yds away looking at me wondering what i was doing...

No, I wonder how they'd fly though. I tried fletch Pro max and Pro Hunter in four fletch right helical and am happier with the Pro Hunters. What jig are you going to use to make them?

Just asked this question on a really old thread and figure it would be better to ask it here being that it’s more active. I’m looking to get into bow hunting. I’m a righty but left eye dominant. I shoot a rifle off my left shoulder and are far more accurate then if I shoot righty. Is it common in archery with someone who is left eye dominant/right handed (vice versa) to shoot with a left handed bow or is it more common to cover your eye?

My buddy and I are both left eye dominant. He switched to a lefty bow about 10 years ago and loves it. I shot his bow a couple of times, didn't feel right to me. I'm sticking with a right hand bow. I'm not the best shot in the world, but I can get the job done.

Thanks, my friend suggested I try shooting off my left shoulder and I was totally in doubt that I would even hit the target and it blew me away on how accurate my shots were. My concern is that with a bow and drawing back the arrow with my weaker arm would pose a problem. I’m going to hit my local archer shop and give it a try before I pick up my first bow. Thanks again!

If you close your left eye and sight in your bow with your right eye, you should be fine. Best of luck and post a pic of that new bow when you get it.
