I recently got the frame replacement due to rust perforation, at the end of 2018 December I think. In the last 6 months my rear differential housing has gotten very Rusty. I called Toyota corporate and they blew me off at the end they said that I need to contact the lawsuit / court administrator. I thought the rear differential cover was part of this settlement? Can someone help me to clarify this? Or better yet does anyone know who I need to contact about that to take further action?

Just use 1/4 of a spray paint can to paint it. If you buy the good stuff from Walmart, you might be out 75 cents for what you used on the differential cover.

What do mean by diff cover? The whole axle housing?

Not trying to be rude, but its a 14 yr old truck. What is toyota supposed to do about rust? They've already given you a new frame, i dont know of any other manufacturers that are anywhere near as generous

While I agree with you 100%, I think OP was asking a specific question, does the axle housing get replaced as part of the frame swap?

Pretty sure the answer is no..

OP, do a search on here. More than a few 1st gen guys that have done what @EatSleepTacos just recommended. Or clean it really well and slather some JB weld on there

It's pretty Rusty it's not leaking yet and would probably be a long time to leak but I worry about pulling knee oil caps off rounding them off and I worry about my spring perches

Can confirm the axle is not part of the frame swap, though that would be nice. Enough gets replaced as it is (frame, LCAs, leafs, probably something else I don't know about).

Have any pics of this? If it were me I would just tackle the project myself. Remove the rear suspension, clean the axle up, and use some brush on rust converter, like POR15

lol I'll translate. Took me a couple reads too to figure it out.

"I worry about rounding off the drain and fill plugs on the diff when changing the oil. I also worry about the leaf spring perches becoming weak."

Rear axle housings rust through all the time on first gens and third gen 4Runners once they get to the 15 year mark in a corrosive environment. I'm sure it'll happen to the second gen trucks eventually too.

I guess I'm going to osph and paint. Put in new oil plugs. This is the first tacoma I've had. I had an 88 p/u and a 90 p/u. Bodies rusted but not frames and running gear. Not like this.

If you're seeing rust this bad, you'll probably want to do some sort of coating. Fluid Film is what I use and recommend. It can be applied over rust, but taking a wire wheel or brush and knocking off the heavy flakes before hand would be a good idea.

Can also do something like POR 15 and paint if you want to do more prep work

Wire brush it, hit it with some Rust Oleum. A week or two later, Fluid Film it. Wrap your drain and fill plug with Teflon tape when you reinstall them. In my opinion, this helps keep them from seizing. I've been doing this for years and have never had a problem with a stuck plug.

My frame was replaced in February of 2018 but the rear axle was not. Mine was rusty too, I used rustoleum rust reformer. Here are my results https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/rust-removal-prevention.621030/#post-21209482
